Lafayette Urban Ministry Serves 900+ Meals


Yesterday, Lafayette Urban Ministry hosted the 33rd annual Greater Lafayette Interfaith Community THANKSGIVING Celebration. The event was free, open to the public and included a Thanksgiving feast served from noon to 2 p.m. Special guests included State Representative Sheila Klinker. There was also live entertainment from Frank Rosenthal, the West Lafayette High School Orchestra, Jason Dufair, and Second Presbyterian Church featuring Ebony Barrett. More than 900 meals were served, which included 75 turkeys, stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls and 112 pies. It was a festive event for the community. To view event PHOTOS, click button below.
 
Special thanks to Central Presbyterian Church for most of the turkeys (28) and for the beautiful facility. Thanks also to the major donors, Lafayette Auto Supply, Industrial Federal Credit Union, Cathy Russell Team Real Estate, Denny’s Body Shop, Purdue Aviation, and Phronesis, Inc. — as well as Lafayette Brewing Co., Jane’s Gourmet Deli & Catering, and Popp-A-Top for food donations.

Lafayette Urban Ministry Serves 800+ Meals on Thanksgiving


Yesterday, Lafayette Urban Ministry hosted the 32nd annual Greater Lafayette Interfaith Community THANKSGIVING Celebration. The event was free, open to the public and included a Thanksgiving feastfrom noon to 2 p.m. Special guests included State Representative Sheila Klinker. There also was live entertainment from Frank Rosenthal,West Lafayette High School Orchestra, Blue Moon Rising and Marty & Caity Quinn. More than 800 meals were served, which included 75 turkeys, stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls and 112 pies. It was a grand celebration for the community.

Special thanks to First Christian Church for most of the turkeys, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for most of the pies, Central Presbyterian for the beautiful facility. Other major donors were Denny’s Body Shop, Lafayette Auto Supply, Lafayette Retina Clinic, Wabash National, Phronesis, and Soller-Baker Funeral Homes — as well as Great Harvest Bread Company, Jane’s Gourmet Deli & Catering, Kentucky Fried Chicken, MCL Cafeteria & Bakery, McAlister’s Deli, Oliverio’s Southland Restaurant, and Olive Garden for the donations of food & supplies. Additional thanks to the students enrolled at the LUM After School Program, Cumberland Elementary School, St. Boniface School, St. Mary Cathedral School and St. Thomas Aquinas religious education classes for creating all of the table decorations and placemats.

Event details are as follows:
  • Thanksgiving Day—Thursday, November 22
  • Noon to 2 p.m.
  • Central Presbyterian Church
  • FREE, open to all
The FREE meal includes a traditional Thanksgiving feast with turkey, dressing/stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and a variety of pies & desserts.

DONATIONS of food & supplies & VOLUNTEERS are needed.
Cash donations are preferred because they allow LUM to purchased what is needed, when it’s needed. Donations of “needed items” are also welcome and appreciated.

  • Performing
  • Hosting, greeting
  • Setting up, cleaning up

Immigration Clinic


Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk

| Thursday, November 22 | 8 a.m.  start time |
| Cattail Trail Loop, West Lafayette | $35 per person |

The Turkey Trot 5K is open to runners of all ages and abilities and welcomes runners, walkers, dogs, strollers, wagons, turkey hats and more. The Turkey Trot 5K convenes at the Walmart in West Lafayette and follows the Cattail Trail Loop — which is flat and paved and allows participants to run on a scenic route through the Celery Bog nature area on a crisp November morning. Advanced registration is encouraged but race day walk-ups are welcome!

All Turkey Trot 5K proceeds directly support the programs and services offered by Lafayette Urban Ministry. To register, go to turkeytrot5krun.org.

The Annual Community Thanksgiving Celebration is a true community event, where everyone is welcome; and LUM relies on donations of money, food & supplies, and time from the community as well.

More than 800 people will be served. There are many opportunities for YOU to serve your community neighbors on Thanksgiving morning. Make a difference this Thanksgiving holiday — donate your time cooking, serving, entertaining, hosting, greeting, setting up, cleaning up, and more. Lots of food and supplies are needed, too — donate food or make a cash donation to make this special community event possible.

The event was free, open to the public and included a Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 2 p.m. with special guests, State Representative Sheila Klinker and West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis, and live entertainment from West Lafayette High School and more. More than 800 meals were served, which included 75 turkeys, stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls and 112 pies. It was a grand celebration for the community.

LUM Volunteer Opportunities — Current Needs


LUM needs you! There are lots of volunteer opportunities at LUM. Become a volunteer today! Here are current LUM volunteer opportunities:

The LUM Emergency Shelter needs Intake Volunteers weekdays from 2 – 4 p.m. for two to ten hours per week. Intake Volunteers meet one-on-one with potential shelter guests to do brief intake interviews, provide passes to the LUM shelter, help our guests to reconnect with family, and make referrals to addiction, mental health, employment and housing services. Income Tax Preparers

The LUM Volunteer Tax Assistance Program offers flexible hours, the training is provided at no cost, and the time commitment is up to you. In all tax volunteer roles, individuals who are bilingual, multi-lingual, or have international experience are helpful. Training is provided. Food Pantry Volunteers

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry needs volunteers Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – noon; and Saturdays from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. for three to 16 hours per week. Food Pantry volunteers distribute food to clients and may shop for food, unload food donations and shelve and sort food. Good customer service skills needed and the ability to lift boxes of food is desired. A weekly commitment is requested. After School Program Volunteers

The LUM After School Program needs volunteers each weekday from 2 – 6 p.m. when school is in session. Volunteers work with the children to complete their homework as well as assist the director in other tasks like set up, clean up, distribute snacks, etc. You must first complete the online application and training. Once you receive confirmation of approval from the director, you may sign up online. LUM Camp Counselors

Sixty volunteer camp counselors and activity leaders are needed for LUM Camp 2017 — – August 4 at Hanging Rock Camp. LUM Camp is a week-long, overnight camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old. Counselors must be able to spend the entire week at LUM Camp from 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4. LUM Good Samaritan Fund FOLLIES
