Meet Cheryl Fowler – LUM Board President

Celebrating the Women of LUM in March

LUM is excited to introduce you to the president of the LUM Board of Directors, Cheryl Fowler.

Cheryl has been an active LUM volunteer for more than eight years when she was selected to represent her church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tippecanoe County, on the LUM Board of Directors. In addition to serving on the LUM Executive Council for the past four years, Cheryl has served on the Hunger Hike Fundraising Committee for seven years and was the program director for the LUM Community Thanksgiving Feast in 2015 & 2016.

Cheryl grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduated from Finneytown High School, and earned a BS in marketing from Miami University, Ohio. Cheryl lives in West Lafayette with her husband of 36 years, Gary, and they have an adult daughter, son-in-law and seven-month old granddaughter. In addition to her family, she draws inspiration from music, especially this Carrie Newcomer song lyric,

“The greatest revolution is a simple change of heart.”

Cheryl shared that,

“Central to my faith is the inherent worth and
dignity of each person and my commitment to
justice, equity and compassion for all.”

This is what drew her to get involved with Hunger Hike and the new LUM Westside Food Pantry, opening this April.

“Creating awareness of food insecurity, raising money to fight hunger and providing food assistance to local families,”

is important to Cheryl. She is most proud of her work with the LUM Executive Council, stating that,

“Serving as the liaison for my church, working with the governance of LUM and witnessing firsthand the LUM volunteers & staff making a difference in people’s lives, gives me such a positive feeling. LUM truly is in the business of helping to restore human dignity and hope.”

Cheryl Fowler and Wes Tillett, LUM executive director

Following a long history of women serving with LUM, Cheryl is a humble and hardworking leader and volunteer. Over the years, she has stepped up and led when needed but has also rolled up her sleeves and participated in the day-to-day work at LUM.

“LUM helps me live out my values,”

Cheryl shared with pride and gratitude.

Cheryl also serves on the social justice team with her church and a racial justice group in the community. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, outdoor activities including camping, traveling, music and supporting the arts, and tap dancing, which she has done since she was four years old.

LUM and the children and families served by LUM are blessed to have someone like Cheryl as their leader, advocate, and servant.

Recap – LUM Community Thanksgiving Feast

750 Meals – 75 Turkeys – 112 Pies – 100 Volunteers

Despite COVID-19, the LUM Annual Community Thanksgiving Feast persisted and was a success. Many of our neighbors are struggling and need food. It is for this reason that LUM decided to re-imagine the event and make it curbside with meals packaged to go. Rather than open our doors and welcome our neighbors for a community event, LUM volunteers and staff safely greeted our guests outside and provided as many meals as they needed. Even though it was a curbside event it still brought together the entire community.

The to-go meals included roasted turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing (AKA dressing), bread, bottled water or milk, and a slice of pie. More than 750 meals were distributed — including 78 turkeys and 112 homemade piesCommunity Thanksgiving Feast takes over two months of planning, engages more than 100 volunteers and requires approximately $10,000 in donations to make it happen.

Thanks to Jess Avila, who directed the event; and Phil Butera, who headed up the kitchen crew. LUM is especially grateful to Central Presbyterian Church for use of their facilities as well as Indiana State Representative Sheila Klinker for mingling with our guests. A special thanks also to all who donated food and gave financial support. It was a magical community event and a wonderful community Thanksgiving holiday celebration for all.

LUM Community Thanksgiving Feast

Event Info | Donate Food | Donate $ | Volunteer | Sponsor

On Thanksgiving day, Lafayette Urban Ministry will host the Community Thanksgiving Feast at noon at Central Presbyterian Church. At the first LUM Thanksgiving event 34 years ago, 75 people attended. This year, LUM will distribute more than 800 meals including over 75 turkeys and 112 pies. The fixin’s will include stuffing (dressing), mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, cranberry sauce & gravy. Everyone is welcome, no reservations are necessary, and it’s FREE.

Due to COVID-19, the meal will be the same but everything else will be different. Here are some of the modifications for 2020:

  • To-Go meals only, distributed curbside with no contact
  • Guests must not attend if sick, must line up outside on markers, six feet apart with a mask on, and must allow their temperature to be checked and recorded and sign a waiver
  • Volunteers will be limited to the minimal number needed, must be at least 18 years old, will be screened and must follow strict health & safety protocols

Won’t you consider a donation to support this important holiday tradition?

Cash and food donations are still being accepted. Donate online at lumserve.org. For more information, go to lumserve.org/thanksgiving.

Meet Jess – New LUM Thanksgiving Director

Jess Avila – LUM Community Thanksgiving Feast

Jess Avila is the new director for the LUM Community Thanksgiving Feast. She is responsible for all aspects of the annual celebration where more than 800 free meals will be distributed on Thanksgiving (11/26) at Central Presbyterian Church, Lafayette.

Jess is originally from Liberty, New York, and moved to West Lafayette with her family. She graduated from Harrison High School, served in the US Army Reserves for four years, earned an associates degree from Ivy Tech Community College in Child Development, and a BA in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies and Pre-Law from Purdue University. She still lives in West Lafayette and is engaged to be married to Phil in 2021. They have 15 nieces and nephews and three cats (Tucker, Bentley & Panther). Jess is a personal trainer, youth exercise specialist & nutrition coach with a local fitness center; and head girls basketball and track & field coach at Klondike Middle School. With LUM, Jess & Phil have volunteered for more than six years including the Community Thanksgiving Feast (pictured).

Jess shares that,

I am most happy when I am helping others
— both people and animals.”

She finds inspiration in “young people who give us this bright light and hope for a better future.” She has great empathy for families struggling with poverty and food insecurity. Jess shared that,

My mom did her best but needed help and sometimes we were left feeling worthless, hopeless, sad, scared and confused because we needed that help.

Jess admires LUM, sharing that,

I see all of the LUM staff members working to serve while ‘restoring dignity,’ as stated in the mission statement.

Jess enjoys nature (kayaking, hiking, running, biking, and feeding wild animals), cooking, reading, watching movies, comedy, activism and social justice, being a Purdue & New York Jets fan, watching and playing sports, hanging out at home with Phil, and ranch dressing.

LUM is fortunate to have Jess Avila join the LUM staff.
