Hunger Hike also offers an opportunity for runners to be a part of the fight against hunger — the HH5K Run — one day prior to Hunger Hike (traditional 3K Walk). The HH5K Run is open to runners of all ages and abilities who share a common goal: Fighting Hunger!

The HH5K Run will convene in Celery Bog Nature Area. The course is mostly flat and paved and allows participants to run on a scenic route through West Lafayette including the Celery Bog in early autumn.

Advanced Registration (only $30) is encouraged. The purpose of the HH5K Run is to use physical exercise to draw attention to and provide funds for “Feeding the Hungry.” All HH5K proceeds directly support the Lafayette Urban Ministry food assistance programs including the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry; Food Finders Food Bank, Inc.; and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Haitian Ministry including the Haiti Water Purification Project. It’s an opportunity to support these outstanding local organizations while enjoying a serious 5K event.

Annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk benefiting LUM — THIS THURSDAY

Lafayette, IN — The annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk will kick off on Thanksgiving morning at McAllister Park (formerly the Lafayette Golf Course). Come join us at the crack of dawn on Thanksgiving morning to run or walk in the Turkey Trot 5K. It’s a fun family event that is open to runners, walkers, strollers, and dogs. All of the proceeds will help local families through the programs of Lafayette Urban Ministry. Turkey Trot details are as follows:

  • Date: Thursday, November 24 – Thanksgiving Day
  • Start Time: 8 a.m.; Check In: 6:30 – 7:30 a.m.
  • Location: McAllister Park (formerly the Lafayette Golf Course) on Golfview Dr off of N 9th Street Rd in Lafayette
  • Fee: $35 for Adult; $10 for youth (under 13)

Music will be provided by Shamus from B102.9, and our mascot, Tom the Turkey will be there to greet runners at the start and finish and available for photos. Meet the LUM “Seasonal” Staff


Cheryl Fowler Community Thanksgiving Celebration, program director


2015-10-01 Fowler_Cheryl 002 (2) (1280x1277)Cheryl is originally from Cincinnati where she met her husband Gary. They moved to Indianapolis in the mid-1980’s. Cheryl has lived in West Lafayette with Gary for 16 years and is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tippecanoe County. Cheryl graduated from Miami University (Oxford, OH) with a BS in Business/Marketing.

Cheryl and Gary have one daughter, Claire, and son-in-law, Stephen who live in St. Louis. She has served as a LUM board member since 2013, and has been on the Hunger Hike Fundraising Committee since 2014. Cheryl is the local coordinator for International Experience, a non-profit, high school student international exchange program. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family & friends—and loves tap dancing. This is Cheryl’s second year as program director for the LUM Community Thanksgiving Celebration. She shared, “I am grateful to be a part of this event which provides a place for all to come together on Thanksgiving day for food and fellowship.”


Ben Murphy — Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk, program director


2016-09-20-murphy-ben-002-2Ben is originally from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky and now lives in West Lafayette with his wife, Alison. He earned a BS in Computer Graphics Technology and Operations & Supply Chain Management, both from Purdue University (West Lafayette). Ben loves running outdoors, hanging out with his wife, exploring nature and reading.

He and his wife are active in the community and within their church, St. Ann’s Church (Lafayette). He also has volunteered with the LUM After School Program. Ben shared that “knowing that the Turkey Trot will raise money for LUM to help children and families right here in our community” gives him pride. “Giving starts at home with our neighbors and local community, which can be powerful to help motivate individuals to change their position in life—and is what drives us to do great work in life.”

The Turkey Trot 5K Run was a fun Thanksgiving morning run raising money for vital programs for our community. Despite COVID-19, LUM was able to offer a safe, LIVE running event, following a plan approved by the Tippecanoe County Health Department.

The Live Runners wore face masks and has staggered starting times (7:40, 8, 8:20, 8:40, and 9 a.m.) to keep runners at a very safe distance from each other.

LUM also offered a Virtual Race allowing runners run on their own, track their race on our app, an post photos.

Due to COVID 19 – this year’s race will be very different.

The LUM Turkey Trot 5K Run is open to runners of all ages and abilities and welcomes
runners, walkers, dogs, strollers, wagons, turkey hats and more. This year you may participate as a LIVE RUNNER or a VIRTUAL RUNNER.

  • LIVE RUNNERS convene at the Walmart/Christina’s in West Lafayette and follow the Cattail Trail Loop — which is completely flat and paved and allows participants to run on a scenic route through the Celery Bog nature area on a crisp November morning. LIVE Runners will have staggered run times.
  • VIRTUAL RUNNERS may run at their own pace. All participants receive a Turkey Trot T-shirt.

All Turkey Trot 5K proceeds directly support the programs and services offered by Lafayette Urban Ministry.

What to Know If You’re Attending the LIVE RACE

Here is some important information if you are participating in the LUM Turkey Trot 5K Run. Details are as follows:

  • Times — Day of Run
    • Start Times: 7: 40 a.m. | 8:00 a.m. | 8:20 a.m. | 8:40 a.m. | 9:00 a.m. |
    • All runners must select a start time at registration
    • To schedule a LIVE RACE start time, click HERE
    • Maximum of 50 runners per time slot
    • Arrive no more than 15 minutes before your scheduled start time
  • Location: Turkey Trot staging area is in the parking lot of Christina & Co., Cumberland Ave., West Lafayette
  • Course: Cattail Trail Loop – Celery Bog Nature Area. View route map HERE.
  • Parking: Walmart near Christina & Co., Cumberland Ave, West Lafayette
  • Bathrooms: Available inside the Walmart Superstore
  • Awards: Trophies will be given to the top three (3) overall men, women, and youth in both LIVE and VIRTUAL Races. The 1st place men and women in each age division will have certificates mailed to them after the race.
  • Timing Chips: Timing chips must be tied to your shoe in order to record your time. After the race, please remove the chip and return it to one of the labelled boxes at the finish line and registration table.
  • Refreshments: Bottled water & fruit will be available at the end of the race (no other food will be allowed due to COVID-19)
  • Registration: No on-site registration; must register in advance, click HERE

Runner Benefits & Prizes:

Official Turkey Trot T-SHIRT – All eligible Turkey Trot 5K Run participants who register will receive a special Turkey Trot 5K Run T-shirt. Participants will be provided with water and a snack following the race. The men and women’s winners will receive recognition & a medal after the race. The race will be electronically timed using computer chip technology recording their race time as they cross the timed finish line. Results will be available upon completion of the race and posted on the LUM website soon after the race.

As a participant in the Turkey Trot 5K Run on Thursday, November 26, 2020, I verify that I have read, understand, and accept the terms of this waiver and release.

My submission of this form shall act as my legal signature. I understand the nature of this event and the risks involved in participating in this event. I know that running and walking a trail race is a potentially hazardous activity. I understand that I should not participate unless I am medically able and sufficiently trained to do so. I agree to abide by any decision of any race official concerning my ability to safely complete this event. I assume all risks associated with my voluntary participation in this event, including, but not limited to, traffic and other conditions of the trials, falls, river, and contact with other participants, and the effects of the weather, including extreme temperatures and precipitation.

Knowing these facts, for, and in consideration of, my participation in this race, I, for myself, my heirs, executors, administrators, or anyone else who might claim on my behalf, waive, release, covenant not to sue, and fully indemnify and hold harmless and discharge the Lafayette Urban Ministry, the City of West Lafayette, race participants, race officials, workers, volunteers, and any and all officers, directors, employees and other representatives of the foregoing, and any successors or assigns of the foregoing, and hold and waive them harmless from and against ANY AND ALL actions, claims, injuries, demands, liabilities, loss, damage, or expenses, including but not limited to death, personal injury, and property damage, whether foreseen or unforeseen, arising out of, or in the course of, my participation in this event, the Turkey Trot 5K Run.

5K logoThis year Hunger Hike 2015 offers an opportunity for runners to also be a part of the fight against hunger — the HH5K Run — on Saturday, September 19th, one day prior to Hunger Hike (traditional 3K Walk). The HH5K Run is open to runners of all ages and abilities who share a common goal: Fighting Hunger!

The annual HH5K Run will convene at White Horse Christian Center (1780 Cumberland Avenue, West Lafayette) with start/finish in the Celery Bog Nature Area. The 5K route allows participants to run while a scenic route through West Lafayette in early autumn.


Advanced Registration is encouraged but race day walk-ups are welcome.
