LUM Needs Food Pantry Volunteers


CALL to ACTION – New Year, Renewed Commitment

St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry Data Entry volunteer welcomes clients to the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry, verifies their household information on LUM’s client database, and determines if they qualify for assistance.

The Data Entry volunteer must be knowledgeable of basic computer operation and database concepts. As special training is required, a long term commitment is desired.

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry needs volunteers Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – noon; and Saturdays from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. for three to 16 hours per week. Food Pantry volunteers distribute food to clients and may shop for food, unload food donations and shelve and sort food. Good customer service skills needed and the ability to lift boxes of food is desired. A weekly commitment is requested.

Tax Assistance Program

Ever thought about volunteering to help people with their tax returns? Don’t know that much about taxes? Don’t worry — you’ll get specialized training or you can choose a volunteer role that doesn’t require tax law certification.

The LUM Tax Assistance Programoffers flexible hours, the training is free and the time commitment is up to you. Choose your role – and get a chance to touch many lives.

Afternoon Receptionist

If you’re interested in volunteering on a regular basis in the afternoon, consider becoming a volunteer afternoon receptionist at LUM.

A Volunteer LUM Receptionist is needed each weekday from noon to 4:30 p.m. — and some weekday mornings.

Volunteer Receptionists greet guests, answer phones and complete general clerical duties in the main office of Lafayette Urban Ministry (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette). Bi-weekly commitment is desired.

After School Program

The students enrolled in the LUM After School Program have returned from winter recess, and volunteers are needed from 2 to 6 p.m., every weekday.

Volunteers are needed to tutor, read to students, give spelling tests and supervise the children.

Volunteer and make a difference in the lives of our students. ASP follows the Lafayette School Corporation’s regular calendar.

Emergency Shelter

The LUM Emergency Shelter needs Overnight Shelter Volunteers 365 nights a year from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. or 8 p.m. to midnight. Duties include checking in guests, serving dinner, distributing toiletries and maintaining a welcoming, safe & clean environment.

Must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must attend a Shelter Training Session, which are held every Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

MEALS Are Needed Too — If you or your group wishes to prepare a meal, click HERE.


Immigration Clinic

The LUM Immigration Clinic has several volunteer opportunities — and is especially grateful for volunteers who speak Spanish.

The volunteers needs are as follows — Program Assistant, Language Translator & Language Interpreter.

Volunteer LUM Camp Counselors Needed


Would you, or someone you know, make a good LUM Camp Counselor?



Sixty volunteer camp counselors and activity leaders are needed for LUM Camp 2017 — July 31-August 4 at Hanging Rock Camp. Our camp is a week-long, overnight camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old.

Volunteer camp counselors must be

  • 18 years old,
  • enjoy working with children,
  • attend training on Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m., and
  • be able to spend the entire week of camp from 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4.

Committed volunteer camp counselors are at the heart of a successful LUM Camp and play an important role with our LUM campers. For additional information, click HERE.

Bus Drivers—After School Program

Volunteer Activity Bus Drivers are needed to transport the LUM After School Program students from their schools to our program facility in downtown Lafayette. Drivers are needed each weekday afternoon August 8, 2017 – May 23, 2018 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Bus drivers must have a valid driver’s license, pass the driver’s test for PPL, have a good driving record, and pass a physical examination. The LUM Emergency Shelter needs Intake Volunteers weekdays from 2 – 4 p.m. for two to ten hours per week. Intake Volunteers meet one-on-one with potential shelter guests to do brief intake interviews, provide passes to the LUM shelter, help our guests to reconnect with family, and make referrals to addiction, mental health, employment and housing services. Income Tax Preparers

The LUM Volunteer Tax Assistance Program offers flexible hours, the training is provided at no cost, and the time commitment is up to you. In all tax volunteer roles, individuals who are bilingual, multi-lingual, or have international experience are helpful. Training is provided. After School Program Volunteers

The LUM After School Program needs volunteers each weekday from 2 – 6 p.m. when school is in session. Volunteers work with the children to complete their homework as well as assist the director in other tasks like set up, clean up, distribute snacks, etc. You must first complete the online application and training. Once you receive confirmation of approval from the director, you may sign up online. LUM Camp Counselors

Sixty volunteer camp counselors and activity leaders are needed for LUM Camp 2017 — – August 4 at Hanging Rock Camp. LUM Camp is a week-long, overnight camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old. Counselors must be able to spend the entire week at LUM Camp from 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 4. LUM Good Samaritan Fund FOLLIES
