Client Corner – LUM Good Samaritan Program – Meet Gregory Gillard

2014-11-13 MissionMoment 004 (2)

Meet Gregory Gillard from Lafayette. He is a client of LUM Case Management, a former guest of the LUM Emergency Shelter and a recipient of the LUM Good Samaritan Fund.

Gregory was unemployed and needed to find a job close to his aunt who has recently taken ill. He moved to Lafayette to look for work and needed to stay as a guest in the LUM Emergency Shelter—and he took full advantage of LUM Case Management.

Within a matter of a few weeks, he landed a job at downtown restaurant and signed a lease. During this transition into his new home and his new job, Gregory needed some emergency financial assistance from the LUM Good Samaritan Fund.

He simply needed “non-skid” shoes for work, some assistance with his security deposit and one or two pieces of modest furniture like a dresser.

Gregory appreciates LUM for giving him the support he needed to get a job and find a home — which gives him the stability and security to allow him to visit his family often, especially his aunt — just in time for the holidays.

Wind Chill Impact on LUM Emergency Shelter

Winter Has Arrived!

2015-01-06 WinterBusShuttle 002 (2)Lafayette Urban Ministry has a shelter protocol for severely cold and snowy weather. In collaboration with the City of Lafayette and Mental Health America, LUM will provide bus transportation from the MHA day shelter to the LUM emergency shelter on evenings with dangerous wind-chill temperatures.

Due to severe weather conditions this week buses were available to transport guests to the LUM shelter in the evening and back to the day shelter in the early morning.

During the winter months if in the unlikely situation where the LUM shelter reaches capacity there are 2015-01-06 WinterBusShuttle 014 (2)plans to guarantee that all homeless individuals will have safe place to sleep during the overnight hours. The overflow sites will be located within a three block walk of the LUM shelter at downtown churches or the LUM office (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette).

So far everyone needing the shelter has been accommodated.

Happy New Year from LUM

22-happy-new-year-wallpaperLet’s take a moment this New Year’s Eve to “Make a Toast” to the LUM accomplishments of 2014. Raise a Glass…

  • If you prepared a meal for the homeless and delivered it to the LUM emergency shelter;
  • If you contributed to the LUM Good Samaritan Fund, helping 1,800 families to avert utility disconnect or eviction from their homes;
  • If you served as a LUM tax preparer and helped return millions of dollars in refunds and credits to low-income households in our community;
  • If you volunteered as a LUM Camp counselor, After School Program tutor or in one of LUM’s other excellent youth programs that are successfully narrowing the academic achievement gap;
  • If you fought hunger in our community by volunteering to feed 2,200 individuals each month through St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry;
  • If you walked in the Hunger Hike, or worked the food line at LUM’s Community Thanksgiving meal, or contributed a toy to one of 2,000 LUM Jubilee Christmas kids

With the heroic efforts of the LUM volunteers and the close-to-miraculous results of our fundraising activities — in 2014 LUM has impacted a record number of children and families in our community. What YOU do for LUM is so important for enabling us to accomplish our mission — and give hope to families, encourage and educate children, and be a positive force in our community

The members of the LUM board of directors and LUM staff thank you for choosing us as your partners this year — and we look forward to focusing on making 2015 an even better year — for the children and families served by LUM.

Happy New Year!

Consider an End-of-the-Year Donation

When Christmas and the New Year approach, many are motivated to think about philanthropy and goodwill toward the community. It is also a perfect time to assess what you have and how you may help others.

For many of you, charitable giving is a regular part of your life and a commitment that you take seriously.

Remember a gift to LUM before the end of the year may lower your taxes. Realizing an income tax deduction is merely acknowledging the importance of giving in your overall investment plan. This deduction is also important because it can lower the cost of giving.

LUM appreciates your support of our mission, services and programs. Check out our website to see how you can make your donation to LUM more meaningful to you.

If you would like to discuss your giving plan, please call or email Joe Micon (765.423.2691 | jmicon@lumserve.org). To donate to LUM online, click HERE.

Happy Holidays from LUM

christmasFBcover

As we “wait in joyful hope,” the members of LUM board of directors and staff wish you and your family to a very Merry Christmas. It is a time to reflect on the generosity of those who have contributed their time, treasure and talent to LUM — and there is no better time to say “Thank You” to each and every one of our faithful supporters who have contributed to another successful year. Without your support, love and encouragement, LUM would struggle to serve as many of our community’s families in need. LUM is indeed humbled by your generosity.

In return for your support, LUM pledges to be true to our mission — lifting up families, encouraging and educating children, and offering hope to the entire community through our hard work, service to others, and good example.

Thank you again. LUM wishes you and your family peace, happiness, and a blessed holiday season. Have a Merry Christmas!

LUM’s Unexpected Blessings — YOU!

 December 2014

Dear Friend,

Joseph "Joe" Micon
Joseph “Joe” Micon

Amid all the hustle and bustle of the season, I try to look for those unexpected blessings that make Christmas so special….

  • The laughter of a child as he opens a brightly wrapped box.
  • The joyful tear of a mother as she welcomes her freshman student home from college.
  • The wonder of a perfectly-timed Christmas morning snowfall.
  • And I remember that Christmas is about the unexpected blessing of our Savior.

Who among us can ever get used to the unexpected way that he came to dwell among us, or the unexpected cast of characters who came to visit him in the stable? Who would have expected that he would live his life concerned only about loving and serving others?

As I look back over our past year together at the Lafayette Urban Ministry, I remember so many instances that were unexpected blessings for me…

  • I remember the young boy in the LUM After School Program who beamed with pride as he showed me the A+ on his spelling test. Our dedicated volunteers had been helping him memorize his list of words all week.
  • I remember the opening of the new LUM Legal Immigration Clinic.  In the days that followed, clinic staff began finding real solutions for neighbors desperate to keep their families together.
  • I remember the smile on the worn face of the homeless man who finally left the LUM emergency shelter after a two week stay. A LUM case manager had helped him make a new start with a new job and a new home of his own.
  • I remember the long summer days of LUM Camp where our campers played, sang, learned and made so many new friends – all while growing in confidence and self-esteem.

Last year, the Lafayette Urban Ministry served 6,027 low-income households through one or another of our 16 programs. For each of those households, the Lafayette Urban Ministry, and you, were an unexpected blessing.

I hope that you will continue to be such a blessing by making a generous Christmas Season gift to the Lafayette Urban Ministry.

Your gift of $50, $100, $250, $500, or $1,000 will be put to use right here in our own community providing at-risk children and their struggling families with brighter futures and more hopeful tomorrows.

The profound meaning of Christmas is that our Savior dwells within every heart that is loving, within each spirit that is tender – and within any gift that is shared generously with another. On behalf of the children and families at LUM who are touched by your generosity, please accept my thanks – and my sincere wish for a joyous Christmas filled with unexpected blessings!

Gratefully,

Thank you.

Unexpected

Even now we simply do not expect to find a deity in a stable.

Somehow the setting is all wrong:

the swaddling clothes too plain,

the manger too common for the likes of a Savior,

the straw too inelegant, the animals reeking and noisy,

the whole scene too ordinary for our taste.

And the cast of characters is no better.

With the possible exception of the kings, who among them is fit for this night?

The shepherds? Certainly too crude.

The carpenter too rough. The girl too young.

And the baby!

Whoever expected a baby?

Whoever expected the advent of God in a helpless child?

Had the Messiah arrived in the blazing light of the glory

of a legion of angels wielding swords,

the whole world could have been conquered for Christ right then and there

and we in the church  -to say nothing of the world!-

would not have so much trouble today.

Even now we simply do not expect to face the world armed only with love.

Inspiration and Reflections

Deuteronomy 15:10
Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.

Deuteronomy 16:17
Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you.

1 Chronicles 29:9
Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lord with a whole heart, and King David also rejoiced greatly.

Proverbs 3:27
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.

Proverbs 11:24-25
There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more, and there is one who withholds what is justly due, and yet it results only in want. The generous man will be prosperous, and he who waters will himself be watered.

Proverbs 21:26
…the righteous gives and does not hold back.

Proverbs 22:9
He who is generous will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor.

Proverbs 28:27
He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.

Malachi 3:10
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.

Matthew 6:3-4
But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Mark 12:41-44
And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.”

Luke 3:11
And he would answer and say to them, “The man who has two tunics is to share with him who has none; and he who has food is to do likewise.”

Luke 6:30
Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.

Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him wouldn’t perish, but would have eternal life.

Acts 20:35
In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Romans 12:8
…Or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.

2 Corinthians 9:10
Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness;

Philippians 4:15-17
And you yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone; for even in Thessalonica you send a gift more than once for my needs. Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account.

James 2:15-16
If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?

TNR Turkey Trot 5K Run — Race Results 2014

2014-11-27 ThanksgivingDay 017 (2)At the crack of dawn on Thanksgiving morning, close to 600 started their holiday off on the right foot by joining in on the Annual Tri-N-Run Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk at the Lafayette Golf Course. The freezing temperatures and intermittent snow flurries did not stop these runners from showing up and supporting LUM. Runners, walkers, babies in strollers, and dogs all took part in this wonderful event.

All proceeds from the TNR Turkey Trot 5K Run go to Lafayette Urban Ministry.

Hundreds of dedicated runners participated to support LUM, including Lafayette City Clerk, Cindy Murray; McCutcheon & Harrison High runners; and Tippecanoe School Corporation Superintendent, Dr. Scott Hanback and his family (pictured above). Thank you to the Tri-N-Run team, Midwest Rentals, all of the runners and sponsors for making this possible.
