Volunteering with LUM

LUM could not provide its many programs and services without the hundreds of volunteers
who generously contribute their time and talents. Most volunteers find their work to be interesting, fulfilling, and rewarding.

There are many different opportunities for volunteering, from working one-on-one with a child in the afternoon After School Program to helping run the 42-bed homeless shelter overnight. Also, there are opportunities to fit every schedule, from regular long-term commitments such as being an advocate once a week in the morning Emergency Assistance Program or at data entry at the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry, to one time work with an event like LUM Camp, Thanksgiving Celebration, or Jubilee Christmas.

Some volunteer positions require training while others require only a willing heart and a helping hand. Email lum@lumserve.org for more information.

Cathy Potter Named Woman of Distinction

Last night, Cathy Potter was honored at the annual Salute to Women event. The Salute to Women program honors women who have excelled in their work, community and family. Honorees are leaders, role models and mentors who have had a tremendous positive impact on the lives of the citizens of our community.

Cathy Potter served on the Lafayette Urban Ministry Board of Directors for nine years from 2005 through 2013 representing St. Andrew United Methodist Church. She served in various leadership positions on the board and was elected President in 2013.

Cathy’s service at LUM was marked by collaboration, consensus building, a good listening ear and a great ability to bring people together to advance the Mission of LUM. This was no small task given the fact that the LUM board is comprised of 44 directors!

She was instrumental in the planning and development of the first-ever LUM Good Samaritan Fund Follies fundraising event and along with her many board responsibilities has a special love for LUM Jubilee Christmas and LUM Camp. Cathy’s presence is felt everyday at LUM and her spirit and vision are evident in many caring and compassionate ways LUM serves at-risk children and working families in our community.

Join us in congratulating Cathy Potter for this well deserved and prestigious honor.

Free Haircuts — And So Much More

2016-02-18 Haircuts - Mariana Paddock 024 (2) (1280x1279)

Once a month Mariana Paddock volunteers by offering free haircuts in the LUM Office for our homeless clients.

She is a talented hair stylist in Lafayette with an established clientele.

At LUM though Mariana offers much more than just a haircut. Her interactions are special. She gives each person her undivided attention — offering them conversation and good cheer. Mariana also gives them love, hope and respect.

As she masterfully trims each person’s hair, you can literally see dignity restored and confidence built in each of her “customers.”

Thank you, Mariana for such a wonderful gift you are giving the homeless clients at Lafayette Urban Ministry and to the entire community.
