The Legacy of Santa & Mrs. Claus Lives On

Local Family Donates Toys to Jubilee Christmas

A local family recently donated a trailer full of toys, dolls, books, and stuffed animals to the LUM Jubilee Christmas program. The gift was from the family of the late Jerry & Lee Mallory. Some of you may know Jerry & Lee Mallory, who were members of Bethany Presbyterian Church. Each Christmas, they would transform themselves into Santa & Mrs. Claus and for many years they visited many different events, including Jubilee Christmas at Bethany, giving toys to local children. The family members are thrilled that Jerry & Lee Mallory’s joy of Christmas will live on through this year’s Jubilee Christmas. LUM is grateful for Jerry & Lee Mallory’s years of service to the children of our community and to their family for this generous gift.

In 2019, 30 churches at 26 events provided new toys, books, food, and clothing, to parents from 639 local households impacting 1,828 local children. This year’s Jubilee Christmas is scheduled for Saturday, December 12, and there have already been discussions about how to re-invent the event to keep parents, volunteers and staff safe, while continuing to support local families in make Christmas happen for their children. More information will be available by the end of September. If you wish to get engaged or invest in Jubilee Christmas 2020, please email jubilee@lumserve.org or go to lumserve.org/jubilee.

LUM Programs Persist & Thrive in 2020

Jubilee Christmas & Community Thanksgiving

LUM program directors have been thinking about how COVID-19 will impact this year’s Jubilee Christmas (12/12) and Community Thanksgiving Celebration (11/26). At LUM, we are committed to offering both programs in some form this year. Families will still need assistance with Christmas, the community will still appreciate a free Thanksgiving celebration, and the leadership and members of our member churches will still want to offer assistance. Hopefully things will be much better in December but decisions will be made by mid-September.

LUM suggests that you continue to support Jubilee Christmas & the Community Thanksgiving Celebration as you have in past years. Cash donation to these programs would be best, but you may also donate “needed items” to each program. Thank you and your continued support of LUM, Jubilee Christmas and the Community Thanksgiving Celebration. To make an online donation, click the button below. Jubilee Christmas, The Most Joyous Day of the Year

Jubilee Christmas Served 639 Local Families & 1,828 Local Children

The 39th annual Lafayette Urban Ministry Jubilee Christmas Program took place this past Saturday (December 14) at 26 different events throughout Lafayette/West Lafayette.  Thirty churches and numerous individuals, businesses and clubs provided gifts of new toys, books, food, and clothing, to parents from 639 local households impacting 1,828 local children.

Jubilee Christmas is designed to let mom and dad be the heroes, rather than providing gifts to children at a large party or having volunteers deliver toys directly to the home. Jubilee Christmas strengthens families by supporting the important role of parents at Christmas time.

On Jubilee Christmas Saturday, parents arrived at their designated Jubilee Christmas site.  Greeters welcomed and introduced them to their hosts for the day. Parents then began to select toys, clothing and stocking stuffers for their children. Volunteers helped the parents wrap gifts. Each family also received a food card, homemade Christmas cookies and a holiday ham.

A program of this size is a real benefit to our local retail economy. All the gifts and food for Jubilee Christmas are purchased locally. LUM will also see as a result of this program fewer requests for emergency rent and utility assistance in January and February.

More than $250,000 worth of toys and food were distributed; and it took over 1,200 individual volunteers to make it a success this year.

Jubilee Christmas relies on donations from churches, organizations and individuals for a successful Jubilee Christmas. You can help by donating a cash gift of $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or more to Jubilee Christmas.
