LUM is Thinking About Christmas in July

Jubilee Christmas – Saturday, December 14

LUM Jubilee Christmas is only 142 days away, and many of local churches are thinking about “Christmas in July.” Please consider getting engaged in Jubilee Christmas 2021 on Saturday, December 11.

Four Ways YOU & your church, family, business and organization can support Jubilee Christmas are as follows:

  • HOST Families at your own Jubilee Christmas event
  • PARTNER with Host Site and enable them to sponsor more families
  • VOLUNTEER
  • Register Families (10/18-19)
  • Staff the Donation Center (M-F: 11/29-12/7)
  • Jubilee Christmas Day (12/11) – Host Families
  • DONATE – invest in Jubilee Christmas in two ways:
  • Host a “Toy Drive” & Donate Items – to view needed items, click HERE
  • Make a Monetary Donation, click HERE

Last year, 30 churches at 27 events and numerous individuals, businesses and clubs provided for 526 local households, impacting 1,499 local children. Jubilee Christmas gave these parents a chance to be the heroes on Christmas morning as they gave their children gifts of new toys, books, clothing, and food from Santa Claus.

If you need more information or have questions, please go to LUMserve.org/jubilee, email jubilee@LUMserve.org or call 765-423-2691. Thanks…and Merry Christmas!

Central Catholic Students Collect for LUM

Central Catholic Students Donate $1,231 to LUM Shelter

Robert Storey delivering care packages.

On behalf of Central Catholic Jr-Sr High School students, Robert Storey, the director of campus ministry, presented LUM with a check for $1,231.43 in support of Homeless Services at Lafayette Urban Ministry.

As a part of Catholic Schools Week, the students raised the funds during the “Change Drive,” where they collected change for LUM.

In addition to the Change Drive, the students collected items and created “care packages.” They also invited Briton Weise, LUM Emergency Shelter director, to speak via Zoom to the students about homelessness.

LUM is blessed to have such active Catholic schools in Lafayette with students and staff committed to supporting the good work of Lafayette Urban Ministry.

Central Catholic Students Focus on Homelessness

LUM Presentation, Change Drive & Care Packages

As a part of Catholic Schools Week 2021, Briton Weise, LUM Emergency Shelter director, was invited to speak via Zoom to the students at Central Catholic Jr-Sr High School about homelessness and homeless services at LUM. Robert Storey, the director of campus ministry at Central Catholic, and the campus ministry staff coordinated two events benefitting the LUM Emergency Shelter.

The entire student body collected items and created “care packages” and also participated in a “change drive.” The care packages contain a variety of items including gloves, hats, scarves, socks, hand & toe warmers, and prayer cards. The change drive is on track to raise more than $1,000 for the shelter as well. The care packages are available to all of the shelter guests each night and LUM clients. They are also available on a “clothes line” hanging outside the LUM Office (pictured).

Bells Rang for Jubilee Christmas 2020

BELLS RANG this past Saturday (December 12) from churches across the county in celebration of the 40th annual Lafayette Urban Ministry Jubilee Christmas program. Thirty churches and numerous individuals, businesses and clubs provided gifts of new toys, books, food, and clothing, to parents from 525 local households impacting 1,499 local children.

Jubilee Christmas is designed to let mom and dad be the heroes, rather than providing gifts directly to the children or having volunteers deliver toys to the home. Jubilee Christmas strengthens families by supporting the important role of parents at Christmas time.

On Jubilee Christmas Saturday, each family received toys, clothing and stocking stuffers for their children plus a food card, gift wrap, homemade Christmas cookies and a restaurant gift card. A program of this size is a real benefit to our local retail economy. Gifts and food for Jubilee Christmas are purchased locally, and gift cards are redeemed locally. As a result of this program, LUM will see fewer requests for emergency rent and utility assistance in January and February.

If you participated or made a donation this year, THANK YOU! And, Merry Christmas!

VERY SPECIAL THANKS to all of our Host-Sites who, during a pandemic, hosted all of our families, and whose members donated an incredible number of toys, clothes, cookies, blankets, food cards and more. Jubilee Christmas could not happen without their support over the past 40 years.

Central Catholic Junior High Students Support LUM

The Central Catholic Junior High Student Council sponsored a “Spirit Day” fundraiser (students pay to not wear their uniforms) and chose LUM & Jubilee Christmas as the recipient.

They raised $638.76, which will be used to assist the Jubilee Christmas events at the Catholic churches — the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, St. Lawrence, St. Mary Cathedral, and St. Thomas Aquinas.

The student council members are also baking cookies for the Jubilee Christmas families at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Please join us in thanking these junior high school student leaders for their generosity and commitment to helping others.

Couple Donates $10,000 to Feed Local Families

Jubilee Christmas Families Receive Restaurant Gift Card

A local couple, who wish to remain anonymous, made a donation to LUM of $10,000 to feed local families who are struggling. They met with Wes Tillett, LUM executive director, to make sure that their donation would be distributed soon, go to local families in need and direct these families to a place in town to eat. The donor shared that,

“It’s Christmas time, the happiest time of the year
— and we wanted help in some way.”

As a result, this Saturday each of the 525 families registered for Jubilee Christmas will be receiving, in addition to toys for their children, a $15-$20 gift certificate to this couple’s favorite restaurant — Lafayette Brewing Co. Their gift will not only feed 525 families with 1,500 children but will also support a family-owned & operated, downtown business. During their visit with Wes, the couple kept coming back to the passage,

“When did we see you hungry?”

(Matthew 25:31-46).

Such a powerful, generous, thoughtful gift from an amazingly supportive local couple. Join us in thanking them.

{Please note: the LBC gift certificates may be used for carry-out or dine-in, for food & nonalcoholic beverages only, and are redeemable for up to one year. Plus, kids eat free on Sundays.}
