Last year, financial assistance was provided 1,780 times and $109,784 was shared through the LUM Good Samaritan Program. Evictions were averted. Utility disconnects were halted. Prescription medication was secured. More than $1.6 million has been shared over the past 14 years. The money raised at LUM Follies, including your gift, is a significant part of this emergency fund.

LUM Camp (July 29 – August 2) – A week-long, overnight camp program at Hanging Rock Camp for children from 8 to 10 years old from low-income families. Why not say “yes” this year to being a volunteer LUM Camp Counselor?

Hunger Hike (September 21-22) – Saturday, September 21 is the annual HH5K Run. Sunday (9/22) is the traditional Hunger Hike 3K Walk. Proceeds benefit LUM Food Programs, Food Finders Food Bank Inc., and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Haiti Ministry. Mark your calendars and get your team together.

Port of Hope (November 7) – Port of Hope is an evening fundraising event in support of the LUM Immigration Clinic. The event includes heavy appetizers from local restaurants, a silent auction featuring items from around the world and entertainment by musicians from around the world.

Community Thanksgiving Celebration (November 28) – The LUM Community Thanksgiving Celebration is on Thanksgiving Day from noon to 2 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church (Lafayette). More than 800 people will be served dinner and dessert, and you may be a part of this special program by volunteering or making a donation.

Turkey Trot 5K Run (November 28) – Start off your Thanksgiving day with the Turkey Trot 5K Run at 8 a.m. on the Cattail Trail Loop, Celery Bog Nature Area, West Lafayette. Runners, walkers, dogs, strollers, wagons & turkey hats are welcome. All Turkey Trot proceeds benefit local families through the programs and services at LUM.

Jubilee Christmas (December 14) – LUM Jubilee Christmas serves over 600 families and 1800 children. Parents visit one of dozens of churches and shop for their children. In addition to the toys and clothes, each family also receives a ham and homemade cookies to make Christmas dinner special too.

LUM Needs You! Here are the CURRENT LUM Volunteer Needs:

There are many different opportunities for volunteering, from working one-on-one with a child to helping run the homeless shelter. Also, there are opportunities to fit every schedule, from regular long-term commitments to one time work with an event. Some volunteer positions require training while others require only a willing heart and a helping hand. READ BELOW for more detailed information on current volunteer opportunities. Tax Assistance Program

Ever thought about volunteering to help people with their tax returns? Don’t know that much about taxes? Don’t worry — you’ll get specialized training or you can choose a volunteer role that doesn’t require tax law certification.

The LUM Tax Assistance Programoffers flexible hours, the training is free and the time commitment is up to you. Choose your role – and get a chance to touch many lives.

Afternoon Receptionist

If you’re interested in volunteering on a regular basis in the afternoon, consider becoming a volunteer afternoon receptionist at LUM.

A Volunteer LUM Receptionist is needed each weekday from noon to 4:30 p.m. — and some weekday mornings.

Volunteer Receptionists greet guests, answer phones and complete general clerical duties in the main office of Lafayette Urban Ministry (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette). Bi-weekly commitment is desired.

After School Program

The students enrolled in the LUM After School Program have returned from winter recess, and volunteers are needed from 2 to 6 p.m., every weekday.

Volunteers are needed to tutor, read to students, give spelling tests and supervise the children.

Volunteer and make a difference in the lives of our students. ASP follows the Lafayette School Corporation’s regular calendar.

Emergency Shelter

The LUM Emergency Shelter needs Overnight Shelter Volunteers 365 nights a year from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. or 8 p.m. to midnight. Duties include checking in guests, serving dinner, distributing toiletries and maintaining a welcoming, safe & clean environment.

Must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must attend a Shelter Training Session, which are held every Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

Immigration Clinic

The LUM Immigration Clinic has several volunteer opportunities — and is especially grateful for volunteers who speak Spanish.

The volunteers needs are as follows — Program Assistant, Language Translator & Language Interpreter.

LUM Good Samaritan Fund FOLLIES

Volunteers are needed for the LUM Good Samaritan Fund Follies fundraising event. More details are as follows:

  • Location: St. Andrew United Methodist Church, West Lafayette
  • Set-up — Thursday, April 12, 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.
  • Staff the LUM Follies event — Friday, April 13, 4:30 – 7 p.m. or 4:30 – 8 p.m.
  • Break-down — Friday, April 13, 8:30 – 10:30 p.m.

LUM Camp Counselors

Would you, or someone you know, make a good LUM Camp Counselor?

LUM Camp is a week-long, over-night camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old. Volunteer camp counselors must be 18 years old, enjoy working with children and be able to spend the entire week at camp (11 a.m. Monday, July 30 to 4 p.m. Friday, August 3).

St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry Data Entry volunteer welcomes clients to the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry, verifies their household information on LUM’s client database, and determines if they qualify for assistance.

The Data Entry volunteer must be knowledgeable of basic computer operation and database concepts. As special training is required, a long term commitment is desired.

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry needs volunteers Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – noon; and Saturdays from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. for three to 16 hours per week. Food Pantry volunteers distribute food to clients and may shop for food, unload food donations and shelve and sort food. Good customer service skills needed and the ability to lift boxes of food is desired. A weekly commitment is requested.

The LUM Follies talent coordinator, Eileen Hession Weiss, is thrilled to announce the line-up of entertainment for this year’s LUM Good Samaritan Fund Follies.
