LUM Helping Neighbors Weather the Storm
Delivering Hope Through Snow and Bitter Cold
This past Monday, when the snow was deep, the cold was dangerous, and sickness was everywhere, Lafayette Urban Ministry opened its doors. While the county was virtually closed, 191 households were welcomed and offered help and hope on that bitter day. It was the third week of the month, when money is often gone and food is running low — and LUM showed up — with valiant volunteers, selfless staff members, dependable donors.
With a small crew and big hearts, the LUM Protein Food Pantry served 91 families impacting 290 individuals with meat, produce, and basic necessities. Two households facing crisis found relief through the LUM Financial Assistance Program: one kept the lights and heat on, another avoided eviction. A family found guidance through the LUM Immigration Clinic, and 97 unhoused neighbors found warmth, food, and safety in our shelters (47 guests in the LUM Emergency Shelter, and 50 in the Winter Warming Station, with rides provided in the bitter cold.
All day long, the LUM Office lobby stayed open as a refuge from the wind and snow. This is love in action, made visible, no matter the weather.
