Bashir’s Story

Temporary Protected Status is a designation provided to certain contries experiencing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or other issues that would make it extremely dangerous for people to be deported back. To apply for the status, individuals need to have been living in the US at the time their coutnry received a TPS designation.

For the past two years, the LUM Immigration Clinic has been helping to obtain Temporary Protected Status for refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan. Since 2022, LUM has helped 15 Ukrainians and Afghans to apply for or renew their TPS, allowing them to find safe harbor in Indiana while their countries are wracked by war.

Bashir is an Afghan PhD student at Purdue with an expiring passport. If he did not renew his passport, Bashir would have lost his visa and could have been deported. However, there is no longer an Afghan embassy in the US, and no other country would allow him temporary entry to renew his passport. He was within days of losing his legal status to be in the US when the LUM Immigration Clinic was able to use the COVID-era exception to help him broker an agreement with the Afghan consulate in Toronto. Bashir was able to renew his passport by mail. He now has a new passport and has been granted Temporary Protected Status in the US.

Looking for a reason to support the LUM Immigration Clinic?  Here are five.

  1. LUM provides assistance at very low or no cost, helping our immigrant neighbors navigate the complex and daunting US Immigration system. Legal help for many issues can run into the thousands of dollars.
  2. LUM assists people who are legally entitled to an immigration benefit, but do not have the financial means to claim it.
  3. The LUM Immigration Clinic has helped hundreds of local people gain citizenship, obtain green cards, and get asylum and temporary protected status.  They’ve helped people from all over the world to become Hoosiers.
  4. LUM has trained volunteers who help stretch every dollar into many more hours of certified legal assistance.
  5. Every dollar donated to the LUM Immigration Clinic will be matched by our sponsors

Everyone who donates $500 or more will get two tickets to the Match Campaign celebration on Thursday, May 2nd at Lafayette Brewing Company.  Join us for this intimate after-work event.  Enjoy delicious food and drinks. Mingle with other Immigration Clinic supporters and sponsors. Talk to clinic staff and get updated on all the latest work that the LUM Immigration Clinic is doing.

In 2023 alone, the LUM Immigration Clinic has provided tens of thousands of dollars worth of no-cost or extremely low-cost legal immigration assistance. The Immigration Clinic served 235 households and helped:

  • 15  individuals work towards or achieve U.S. citizenship,
  • 23  people obtain or renew their green cards,
  • 4 people obtain Temporary Protected Status, and
  • 17 people obtain Employment Authorizations,

One client was in danger of having her naturalization petition denied and her green card revoked.  She was demoralized and had all but given up.  The Immigration Clinic was able to research her case and file the proper paperwork.  Her petition was approved, and she is now scheduled for her naturalization ceremony and is a valuable employee at a local business.

With your support, the LUM Immigration Clinic will be able to continue helping local immigrants, just like her, gain their citizenship and pursue the American dream.

Everyone who completes the quiz will be entered into a drawing to win their choice of either (1) two tickets to our Match Campaign reception on Thursday, May 2nd at Lafayette Brewing Company OR (2) a copy of The Good Immigrant: 26 Writers Reflect on America.
