Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Gives to LUM
Purdue Chapter Donates Gift Baskets to Shelter
As a part of their national initiative, “Operation AKA Assist,” the members of the Epsilon Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at Purdue created 40 baskets for LUM to distribute to our clients experiencing homelessness. The baskets included snacks, personal hygiene items and an encouraging note from the students. In addition to assembling the baskets, their event included teaching the members about homelessness and the mission and programs of LUM.
Mamie Johnson, secretary, and Anyah Cork, chaplain, recently delivered the baskets to LUM on behalf of their sorority (pictured). The baskets have already been distributed to individuals experiencing homelessness through the LUM Emergency Shelter and Protein Food Pantry. LUM is grateful to have the support of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and appreciate that they took the time to learn more about homelessness in their university community. If you, your company or organization would like to collect items for LUM, please check out our list of “needed item.” Items are listed by “need” and also by program. Some of the Hot Needs are as follows:
- Toilet Paper; Paper Towels; Trash Bags (13 gallon/tall kitchen & 30 gallon)
- Bleach; All Purpose Cleaner (Simple Green concentrate, original scent)
- Disinfectant Wipes; Disinfectant Spray; Disinfectant Cleaner
- Coffee (Caffeinated); Sweetener packets (Sugar, Splenda); Powdered Creamer
You may either ship or drop off items to the LUM Office (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette, IN 47901). Cash donations are excellent because they allow LUM to purchase what is needed, when it’s needed. Donations of “needed items” are also welcome and appreciated. To view the LUM Wish List, click HERE.
