The annual Turkey Trot 5K Run was festive as well as a big success. Turkey Trot attracted a fun bunch willing to arrive before sunrise and run or walk a 5K on a brisk Thanksgiving morning.
Many arrived in costume or wearing a turkey hat, and participated with their entire family including their dogs. Turkey Trot participants shared that they enjoy being able to turn a day of eating into a day of fitness for a great cause. To view the race results, click HERE.

The event was also a successful fundraiser for all of the LUM programs & services offered to local families and children. It is still early but Turkey Trot 2018 is on track to raise over $22,000. Emergency Shelter – Volunteers Needed
The LUM Emergency Shelter needs Overnight Shelter Volunteers 365 nights a year from 8 p.m.-7 a.m. or 8 p.m. -midnight. Duties include checking in guests, serving dinner, distributing toiletries and maintaining a welcoming, safe & clean environment.

The LUM After School Program needs volunteers from 2-6 p.m., every weekday. Volunteers are needed to tutor, read to students, give spelling tests and supervise the children. Volunteer bus drivers are also needed. Volunteer and make a difference in the lives of our students. The Turkey Trot 5K is open to runners of all ages and abilities and welcomes runners, walkers, dogs, strollers, wagons, turkey hats and more. The Turkey Trot 5K convenes at the Walmart in West Lafayette and follows the Cattail Trail Loop — which is flat and paved and allows participants to run on a scenic route through the Celery Bog nature area on a crisp November morning. Advanced registration is encouraged but race day walk-ups are welcome!

It’s a great way to help those in our community in need while celebrating a holiday of “thanksgiving.” It’s also the perfect way to pre-burn some of those pumpkin pie calories while raising money for a great cause — and it’s a blast!
Lafayette Urban Ministry is a non-profit organization made up of more than 40 churches that serves as an essential social safety net for needy children and families in Greater Lafayette. Since 1972, LUM been working hard to return hope and a sense of self-respect to low-income people, improve their quality of life, and challenge social injustice.

Jubilee Christmas (December 9)LUM Jubilee Christmas serves over 600 families and 1,800 children. Parents visit one of dozens of churches and shop for their children. In addition to the toys and clothes, each family receives a ham and homemade cookies to make Christmas dinner special. Jubilee Christmas Coordinators Meetings are scheduled for October 5 &November 7.
