Hunger Hike – THIS Sunday


Tackling Hunger – Locally, Regionally, Globally

Hunger Hike is a fundraising event and also an exciting community event — THIS SUNDAY. It’s not too late to be a Fundraiser!

Hunger Hike is a family event for individuals & teams whose mission is to Raise Awareness & Make a Difference in the Fight Against Hunger. (And it’s Dog Friendly.) The goal this year is to raise $100,000 for food and nutrition programs locally, regionally and globally. The traditional Hunger Hike 1.5K Walk is THIS Sunday (September 18) from 1 – 3:30 p.m. at Riehle Plaza, N 2nd Street, Lafayette.

Hunger Hike — Special Highlights & Surprises

Co-Chairs — Purdue Coaches Gearlds & Mitchell

The Hunger Hike 2022 honorary co-chairs are Purdue Coaches Katie Gearlds (women’s basketball) & Jason Mitchell (crew & rowing).

Coaches Gearlds & Mitchell are perfect ambassadors for Hunger Hike. Both set the bar high for their own work and their teams. They have a serious commitment to serving their community — especially in supporting food assistance and nutrition programs. The student-athletes on their teams might even be in attendance.

Purdue Spirit, Music, Ax Throwing, Zumba & More

Join us THIS Sunday for the Hunger Hike kick-off event.

  • At 1 – 2 p.m. (Riehle Plaza). DJ Powder from Rat Pak Mobile DJs will emcee and provide dance music at Hunger Hike. DJ Powder creates a family-friendly, festive environment during the kick-off of Hunger Hike.
  • The kick-off event will also feature Purdue Pete, the Purdue Cheer team and the Purdue Crew Team. The Purdue Cheer team will perform with Purdue Pete. Thanks to Purdue Athletics, and Purdue Crew Team for their support. There will be FREE Zumba, face painting, ax throwing, balloon animals, clowns, princesses, and massages.
  • At 1:45 p.m., there will be a short ceremony. Sheila Klinker, Indiana State Representative, will kick-off  Hunger Hike with the singing of the US National Anthem with her daughter, Kelly Jacob, followed by an invocation from the Reverend Dr. Hilary Cooke, the Chapel of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.  There will also be awards, including “oldest walker,” “youngest walker,” and “best new fundraiser.”
  • At 2:00 p.m., Hunger Hike supporters begin the 1.5K walk over the pedestrian bridge and around Tapawingo Park, the new family-friendly route. Along the way there will be live boat demos at the Purdue Boathouse, popsicles, and a magic show featuring Scott Starkey, the Wizard of the Wabash. The route ends back at Reihle Plaza with a picnic with hot dogs, chips, and bottled water.

LUM Summer of Service – LUM Camp 2022


Make a Difference This Summer at LUM Camp

The LUM Summer of Service offers volunteer opportunities that fit every schedule. Some require training, but most just a willing heart and a helping hand.

The ultimate LUM “Summer of Service” opportunity is being a LUM Camp Counselor. A few more counselors are needed from 11 a.m. Monday, July 25 to 4 p.m. Friday, July 29. LUM Camp counselors must be:

  • 18 years old
  • prepared to hike, have fun, be outdoors
  • a good team player
  • flexible, fun & fair
  • willing to work with at-risk children from low income families
  • able to spend the entire week at camp (July 25-29)

Make a difference in the lives of local children this summer and receive a $200 stipend. To learn more about becoming a LUM Camp Counselor, click HERE.

Now is a great time to add these important LUM programs and opportunities to your calendar.


LUM Camp (July 25 – 29) – A week-long, overnight camp program at Hanging Rock Camp for children from 8 to 10 years old from low-income families. Why not say “yes” this year to being a volunteer LUM Camp Counselor?

Hunger Hike (September 18) – Saturday, September 21 is the annual HH5K Run. Sunday (9/22) is the traditional Hunger Hike 3K Walk. Proceeds benefit LUM Food Programs, Food Finders Food Bank Inc., and St. Thomas Aquinas’ Haiti Ministry. Mark your calendars and get your team together.

Community Thanksgiving Celebration (November 24) – The LUM Community Thanksgiving Celebration is on Thanksgiving Day from noon to 2 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church (Lafayette). More than 800 people will be served dinner and dessert, and you may be a part of this special program by volunteering or making a donation.

Turkey Trot 5K Run (November 24) – Start off your Thanksgiving day with the Turkey Trot 5K Run at 8 a.m. on the Cattail Trail Loop, Celery Bog Nature Area, West Lafayette. Runners, walkers, dogs, strollers, wagons & turkey hats are welcome. All Turkey Trot proceeds benefit local families through the programs and services at LUM.

Jubilee Christmas (December 17) – LUM Jubilee Christmas serves over 600 families and 1800 children. Parents visit one of dozens of churches and shop for their children. In addition to the toys and clothes, each family also receives a ham and homemade cookies to make Christmas dinner special too.

– Port of Hope is an evening fundraising event in support of the LUM  Immigration Clinic . For many families in our community the LUM Immigration Clinic is their “Port of Hope.” Please support the work of the LUM Immigration Clinic by attending Port of Hope. Port of Hope is a festive event with lots of food from local restaurants, a Market Place featuring unique experiences and items from around the world and entertainment by musicians from around the world.
