Local Individuals “Paid It Sideways” to LUM

Stimulus Money & Retirement Package Donated

Two local individuals, who both wish to remain anonymous, recently “Paid It Sideways” to Lafayette Urban Ministry. One individual donated his entire $1,200 Economic Impact Payment (AKA stimulus funds) and and a second individual donated her entire $6,000 retirement package. Both individuals chose to remain anonymous but shared that they did not need the money and wanted it to benefit the community. They knew that they could trust LUM to use it to support local families in need.

LUM continues to be right on the front lines of this crisis, helping local families with emergency financial assistance, low cost child care & nutritious food; and safe shelter for individuals in need. If you want to use your stimulus money (or retirement package) to help others less fortunate and don’t know how, LUM is a great option. LUM enables YOU to give anonymously and with the peace of mind that your gift will be well-utilized to quickly help people in our local community.

A Fortunate Few Donate Stimulus to LUM

“Paying It Sideways” – Donating Stimulus Check

Lafayette Urban Ministry has recently been the grateful recipient of stimulus funds from individuals “paying it sideways.”

One family from West Lafayette, who wish to remain anonymous, decided to donate their entire Economic Impact Payment to LUM. They shared,

“We knew that our family did not need the stimulus money and wanted to donate it. Since moving to the community 18 months ago, we have heard many good things about the work done at LUM. We wanted the money to benefit our new community and knew that LUM was a good place to give. Our family is happy to support LUM, and would encourage others to do the same.”

LUM continues to be right on the front lines of this crisis, helping local families with emergency financial assistance & nutritious food, and safe shelter for individuals in need. If you have decided to use your stimulus money to help others less fortunate and don’t know how, LUM is a great option. Some Have Donated Stimulus Money to LUM

Many people around the nation have decided to give some or all of their Economic Impact Payment to those who need it most. Some people are giving their “stimulus money” directly to people they know who could use the financial boost. Other people are giving the money to nonprofit organizations that can be trusted to extend help quickly to families in need.

In the past week Lafayette Urban Ministry has been the grateful recipient of stimulus funds from a variety of people. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic LUM continues to be right on the front lines of our community, helping people with emergency financial assistance, nutritious food, and safe shelter. LUM is putting all donations – of money, of gift-in-kind, of time and energy – to good use.

If you have decided to use your stimulus money to help others less fortunate and don’t know how, LUM is a great option. LUM enables people to give anonymously and with the peace of mind that the gift will be well-utilized to quickly help people in our local community.

At the first LUM Community Thanksgiving Celebration, 75 people were welcomed and served. This year, LUM will serve over 75 turkeys with all of the fixing plus 112 different pies to approximately 800 guests. It is a grand celebration that includes dinner, dessert, good company, and live musical entertainment. Everyone is welcome; no reservations are necessary; and it’s FREE.

  • Turkey Donations: This year approximately half of the total turkeys (30+) will be donated by the Christian Men’s Fellowship Group of First Christian Church.  For several years, the Men’s group members led by Pastor Greg Eberhard and Randy Harrington prepare, roast, and carve the turkeys starting Wednesday evening through early Thanksgiving morning. The remainder of the turkeys this year were donated by Central Presbyterian Church, Elston Presbyterian Church, Lafayette Brewing Company, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Purdue Federal Credit Union.
  • Central Presbyterian Church provides their entire facility free of charge. Many of their church members also volunteer with food preparation, facility management, setup and cleanup.
  • Pie Bakers: For the third year, most of the 112 pies are baked by the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Live music will be provided by West Lafayette High School Orchestra students, The Wabash Valley String Band and Frank Rosenthal & Sharron Howard.
  • Support from Local Restaurants: Food, drink & supplies were donated by Great Harvest Bread Company, Jane’s Gourmet Deli & Catering, Kentucky Fried Chicken, MCL Cafeteria & Bakery, McAlister’s Deli, Olive Garden, Oliverio’s Southland Restaurant, and Texas Roadhouse.
  • Decorations: Table decorations and placemats are created by the students enrolled at the LUM After School Program, St. Boniface School and St. Mary Cathedral School. Several local Girl Scout Troops also make placemats and wrap plastic utensils for place settings.
