Joan Low – Superstar LUM Leader & Servant

Appreciation for 16 Years of Leadership

Joan Foord Low, transitioned from being LUM board president as gracefully and humbly as she entered in 2005 as the newly selected representative from her church to the LUM Board of Directors. For the past 16 years, she led with passion and strength through some of the most significant milestones at LUM, including the search and hiring of the new LUM executive director last spring.

Due to COVID-19, Joan was given a Zoom send-off from her colleagues and was presented with a token of appreciation from the LUM board and staff members by Wes Tillett, LUM executive director. Pictured is Wes presenting Joan with a framed sketch of the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah with a plaque that reads,

“With deep appreciation of Joan Low for her years of leadership and service at Lafayette Urban Ministry.”

Joan is one of an impressive group of women who have led and served LUM through the Board of Directors. She is an inspiration to all and a shining example of the contribution individuals can make in our community through the work of Lafayette Urban Ministry. Joan shared that she will still volunteer with the LUM youth programs and wherever else she is needed. THANK YOU, Joan!

Meet the After School Program Team

44 Students| K – 8th Grade | 3 Hours Per Day

LUM is thrilled to introduce the LUM After School Program team (not pictured: Tabatha Volpi, teacher). What a talented and caring team! Led by Kristi Hogue, LUM Youth Programs director, the LUM teachers are assisted each afternoon by volunteers.

The LUM After School Program provides safe, fun and enriching childcare for up to 60 children in Kindergarten to 8th grade in Tippecanoe County. The children are transported by the LUM buses from school to the LUM Ray Ewry Youth Center. For up to three hours each school day, the students work on homework, have a nutritious snack, and participate in craft projects, music, and other fun recreational and educational activities — enabling their parents to finish their workday. The program is staffed by professionally trained teachers, interns and volunteers, whose training exceeds State of Indiana requirements.

In 202080 children were enrolled; and so far in 2021, 44 children are enrolled.

Please consider investing in or volunteering with the After School Program – LUM needs you.

Electric Plus Donates $10,000 including Gift Cards

Generous Gifts to LUM This Holiday Season

The management at Electric Plus, headquartered in Indianapolis, decided to help agencies in the cities of their various offices, including the one in Lafayette. They also wanted to support local business. The employees donated $5,000 and Electric Plus matched that for a total of $10,000. Vince Aynes & Pat McCarthy recently presented LUM with a check for $5,700 plus $4,300 worth of gift cards from more than 15 local businesses. The LUM staff members have begun distributing the gift certificates to the families enrolled in the After School Program and guests in the Emergency Shelter and Winter Warming Station. LUM is grateful to the management and employees at Electric Plus, especially those in the Lafayette office, for selecting LUM as the recipient of this wonderful gift. It is such a blessing especially this time of year. {Pictured L to R: Vince Aynes; Nina Morgan, LUM Protein Food Pantry director, and Pat McCarthy.}
