LUM Volunteer of the Month – January 2024

Barb was born in Connersville, Indiana, and grew up in Lafayette. Although she has lived all over the world, Barb considers Lafayette her home, where she now lives with her husband of 45 years, Gary. They have two adult children — a daughter, Sara, who lives in Lafayette; and a son, Sam, who lives in Seattle, WA. They also have a dog named Millie, who is really the one in charge.

Join us in congratulating Barb Tyner for being selected the LUM Volunteer of the Month for January 2024.

Barb is the newly elected president of the LUM Board of Directors, representing Federated Church. In addition to serving as a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Council, she regularly prepares and serves meals at the LUM Emergency Shelter, participates on a Hunger Hike fundraising team, and volunteer with LUM Jubilee Christmas and the LUM Community Thanksgiving Feast.

As a LUM volunteer, Barb generously shares her leadership experience and human resources expertise, propelling LUM in numerous positive directions. Her exemplary leadership and encouragement for others to participate make her the well-deserved recipient of the LUM Volunteer of the Month honor.

When reflecting on her involvement with LUM, Barb shares that,

“One of my favorite scripture verses is a well-known one, ‘What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.‘ I see LUM live out this verse every day through its mission of meeting ‘basic human needs and uplifting people.‘”

Micah 6:8

Barb encourages others to get involved with LUM adding that,

“I see and hear stories of people who have been loved and cared for through LUM. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this group?”

Barb graduated from Jefferson High School (Lafayette, IN) and earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s in Communications, both from Ball State University. She recently retired as the assistant vice president for Human Resources with the Purdue Research Foundation. Barb also taught high school and college and was a meeting planner at Purdue University. In addition to volunteering at LUM, Barb enjoys hanging out with her family, reading, traveling, singing, playing the violin, and learning Spanish.
