LUM Camp 2018 – 54th Year & Still Going Strong

On August 1, our LUM friends & board members traveled in the LUM bus out to Hanging Rock Assembly Camp in Warren County to experience an evening at LUM Camp. When our LUM friends & board members arrived they met the campers and sang camp songs. They were then treated to an authentic camp supper followed by an ice cream social — ice cream sundaes with all the fixin’s. Our guests scooped and served the ice cream to our campers which encouraged even more interaction (pictured above).

LUM Camp is a 4-day, overnight summer camp for 85 boys and girls (8, 9 and 10 years old), who come from families served by the Lafayette Urban Ministry. Our camp includes all the traditional activities that a great camp should have, such as morning chapel, swimming, hiking, boating, arts & crafts, campfires, corn maze, zip-line and an outstanding staff of camp counselors.

Along with all of these activities, LUM Camp focuses on interactive and experiential learning. Our theme was Let Your Light Shine. Throughout camp, our campers spent much of the week learning about the wonder & science of light. Over 25 scientists and educators from Purdue and the community engaged each child’s natural curiosity with loads of hands-on activities and projects. LUM campers learned about the Indiana State insect, the firefly, and were treated to an awesome fireworks display (pictured below on right), made possible due to a grant from the Riley Children’s Foundation. The highlight of Board Night for the campers, as well as our guests, was the laser light show (pictured below on left). You could tell that our visitors enjoyed returning to their childhood for a few hours and our campers enjoyed having them visit them at camp.

Thank you to everyone who helped make LUM Camp 2018 possible. Through your donations, campership gifts, and volunteer time, you have once again made it possible for our LUM campers to have a positive, life-changing experience that they will remember fondly for the rest of their lives.
