LUM Students Learn About Fireflies

Recently, the 5thsheilafirefly Quarter Summer Learning Program students were treated to a guest speaker — Indiana State Representative Sheila Klinker.

Rep. Klinker taught the children about fireflies and the fireflies’ unique role in the environment and ecosystem of the State of Indiana. Klinker is also partnering with the LUM Campaign for Hoosier Families to give these students a unique opportunity. (She is pictured with her firefly model.)

In the coming weeks, Rep. Klinker and Susan Brouillette, CHF director, will be working with Cindy Haley, 5th Quarter program director, to engage the students in advocating for the firefly being designated as the official insect for the State of Indiana. Forty-seven states have a “state insect.” Indiana is one of only three states without an official insect — and the firefly would be an ideal choice.

Later this summer Susan Brouillette will work with the students to write letters of support for the firefly and coordinate a way to get them to the appropriate committees within the state legislature.

Stay tuned for further developments.
