LUM Summer Students Learning & Growing

LUM 5th Quarter Narrows the Achievement Gap

Since it began, the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program has been focused on one thing — stopping the loss of academic skills and knowledge that occurs during the summer months. Known as “the summer achievement gap,” it impacts elementary and middle school students in general, but low-income students are especially at risk. Students who are not enrolled in a program like LUM 5th Quarter return to school in the fall as many as five months behind their peers, forget information and spend months trying to catch up. Some never do. LUM research has proven that the LUM summer students are AHEAD of their peers when they return to school due to the enhanced learning curriculum and experiences offered through the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program.
