LUM Camp

LUM Camp is a week-long, over-night camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old. Volunteer camp counselors must be 18 years old, enjoy working with children and be able to spend the entire week at camp (11 a.m. Monday, July 27 to 4 p.m. Friday, July 31).

Urgent Need – Summer Volunteers Needed


LUM Summer Childcare Program – Volunteers Needed

Volunteer Teacher’s Aides for the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program are needed this summer. The 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program is offered Monday – Friday, Now through August 3 , from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The program is supervised by the LUM Youth Program Director and trained teachers.

LUM relies on the several volunteers each day to assist in teaching & tutoring, recreational activities, reading, meals & snacks and more. LUM 5th Quarter volunteers must enjoy working with children and have experience helping children (K – 6th grade) achieve academically and socially. Food Pantry – Volunteers Needed

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry (6th & Ferry Streets, Lafayette) needs volunteers for the summer months especially Monday mornings in June. Specific days and times that volunteers are needed are as follows:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, 8:45-11:45 a.m.
  • Saturdays, 12:45-3:15 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to work the Distribution Window, Check-in/Data entry, and pick up and deliver food (truck driver). A weekly commitment is requested. Volunteers may work 2.5 to 14.5 hours per week.

Volunteers are needed for the LUM Good Samaritan Fund Follies fundraising event. More details are as follows:

  • Location: St. Andrew United Methodist Church, West Lafayette
  • Set-up — Thursday, April 12, 3:30 – 6:30 p.m.
  • Staff the LUM Follies event — Friday, April 13, 4:30 – 7 p.m. or 4:30 – 8 p.m.
  • Break-down — Friday, April 13, 8:30 – 10:30 p.m.

LUM Needs Food Pantry Volunteers


CALL to ACTION – New Year, Renewed Commitment

St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry Data Entry volunteer welcomes clients to the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry, verifies their household information on LUM’s client database, and determines if they qualify for assistance.

The Data Entry volunteer must be knowledgeable of basic computer operation and database concepts. As special training is required, a long term commitment is desired.

The St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry needs volunteers Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. – noon; and Saturdays from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. for three to 16 hours per week. Food Pantry volunteers distribute food to clients and may shop for food, unload food donations and shelve and sort food. Good customer service skills needed and the ability to lift boxes of food is desired. A weekly commitment is requested.

Would you, or someone you know, make a good (male) LUM Camp Counselor?


Sixty volunteer camp counselors & activity leaders are needed for LUM Camp 2017 (July 31-August 4) at Hanging Rock Camp. Our camp is a week-long, overnight camp program for low-income children from 8 to 10 years old — and our boy campers need adult, male role models. Committed volunteer camp counselors are at the heart of a successful LUM Camp and play an important role with our LUM campers. For additional information, click HERE.

Volunteer LUM Camp counselors must be…

  • 18 years old
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Attend training on Thursday, July 27 at 7 p.m.
  • Be able to spend the entire week of camp from 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31

Your transportation, housing and food will be covered — and you’ll will get a LUM Camp staff shirt and the experience of a lifetime.

Bus Drivers—After School Program

Volunteer Activity Bus Drivers are needed to transport the LUM After School Program students from their schools to our program facility in downtown Lafayette. Drivers are needed each weekday afternoon August 8, 2017 – May 23, 2018 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Bus drivers must have a valid driver’s license, pass the driver’s test for PPL, have a good driving record, and pass a physical examination. Emergency Shelter—Intake Volunteers

The LUM Emergency Shelter needs Client Intake Volunteers weekdays from 2 – 4 p.m. for two to ten hours per week. Client Intake Volunteers meet one-on-one with potential shelter guests to do brief intake interviews, provide passes to the LUM shelter, help our guests to reconnect with family, and make referrals to addiction, mental health, employment and housing services. Basic computer, data entry and phone skills are required. A weekly commitment is requested.
