LUM Camp – Living Proof of the Impact

Meet Marlena – Camper, Counselor & Director

Dear Friends:

Marlena Edmondson is living proof that LUM Camp is changing the trajectory of young lives.

Marlena’s first experience with LUM Camp was as an 8-year-old girl. Camp was an entirely new experience for her. She had never ridden a horse, never sang silly songs before a meal, never spent time away from home in the nurturing care of fun-loving counselors. Marlena loved it all. LUM Camp was a transformative experience.

The next two summers, Marlena eagerly came back to LUM Camp as a camper. Then, as a teenager, she became a junior counselor. As a young adult, Marlena saved up her vacation time throughout the year so she could spend a week serving as a LUM Camp counselor. Today Marlena serves as the LUM Camp director, creatively crafting each LUM Camp to be a life-giving, life-changing experience for every one of the 80 campers.

Even more, Marlena credits LUM Camp as the catalyst that put her on a pathway toward helping children as a career. Marlena earned a Masters of Social Work degree and works in the Tippecanoe Schools Corporation as a school social worker. LUM Camp helped broaden the horizon of Marlena’s life, purpose, and impact.

(Check out the three-minute video of Marlena telling you her LUM Camp journey in her own words — below.)

Marlena knows what LUM has known since the 1960’s, when it started hosting a camp for children every summer: a week of camp has remarkable benefits in terms of intellectual curiosity, social skills, gross and fine motor skills, positive values, spirituality, and overall positive identity. Because of these scientifically verified benefits of camp, every summer LUM continues to put on a top-notch, weeklong overnight camp for boys and girls, ages 8, 9, and 10.

This summer LUM Camp will take place July 26-29. The children come from families served throughout the year by Lafayette Urban Ministry. Hosted at the lovely Hanging Rock Christian Camp in Warren County, IN, LUM Camp involves swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, boating, morning chapel, wall climbing, zip-lining, snacks, delicious meals, and diverse and caring counselors.

A key component of the year-round LUM Youth Programs (which also include the After School Program and the 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program), LUM Camp is one of the premier summer camp programs available to children anywhere.

LUM Camp is a scholarship-based camp, meaning we only invite children whose parents are not able to pay for the actual cost of camp. The actual cost is more than $200 per camper. We ask the campers’ parents to pay $5 per child and ask our generous donors to cover the rest.

  • $200 = sponsor one LUM camper
  • $400 = sponsor two LUM campers
  • $100 = ½ LUM Camp sponsorship
  • Any amount will support LUM Youth Programs

With so many children eagerly awaiting their chance to attend, would you like to give the gift of LUM Camp – investing in both their short-term fun and long-term life skills?  Who knows? There might be another little Marlena Edmondson attending LUM Camp this year.…

With gratitude,

A Recap of LUM Camp 2021 – Life Changing

Thanks for Making LUM Camp Possible

LUM Camp is the best week of the summer, and this year was the best LUM Camp ever. Strict health & safety protocols were still in place, but the capacity was doubled and the campers enjoyed ALL of the activities. LUM transported 58 boys & girls to Hanging Rock Camp for a life-changing experience.

The theme, Brain Builders, was excitedly embraced by the campers. They had fun discussing and writing in their journals about the “9 types of intelligences” in the brain. The highlight was seeing the joy & excitement in the faces of our campers as they rode on horses, zipped down the zipline, searched for bugs in the creek, dove into the pool, and cruised around the pond in a canoe — many for the first time in their lives.

One evening, LUM Board members and donors were invited to camp to engage with the campers. They attended the camp meeting, sang camp songs, and joined the campers for an outdoor cook-out followed by a campfire which included s’mores. It was a wonderful night. The final day included the Movie Night event featuring Inside Out — the Pixar movie about the brain. To view more PHOTOS, click HERE.

Your donations made it possible to continue this LUM tradition that started in the 1960s. And once again, it was well worth it! LUM Campers made new friends and made great memories, while having a blast and learning new things about the brain and themselves. Truly life-changing. The Best Week of the Summer – LUM Camp

LUM Camp Starts Next Tuesday for 73 Local Kids

LUM Camp kicks off THIS Tuesday for approximately 38 girls & 35 boys from Tippecanoe County. This will be a week filled with fun, friendship and life-changing experiences.

The theme this year is Brain Builders. LUM Campers will be introduced to The 9 Types of Intelligence; and throughout the week, the campers will be reminded of how each activity and workshop helps “build” their “brains” and the way it relates to the “Nine Types of Intelligence.”

It’s not too late to sponsor a LUM Camper this year. Donations to LUM Youth Programs are still welcome. Individuals may sponsor a camper for only $200. Would you please invest in both their long-term life skills and their short-term fun by offering them the gift of LUM Camp?

  • Being a LUM Camp counselor has rewarded me the satisfaction of seeing the excitement, energy, confidence and joy when a child scales the climbing wall, splashes in the pool, navigates a canoe, zips through the trees. What a fun and exhausting week! ~Mary Ann (pictured)

LUM Counselors LOVE Their Camp Experience

LUM Camp will be the best week of your summer. Our LUM Camp volunteers consistently share how much they LOVE their camp experience. A few LUM Camp volunteer-counselors recently shared the following:

Being a LUM Camp Counselor was a highlight of my summer.

I was so excited to finally become a counselor after being a camper myself — that’s how memorable LUM Camp was for me as a kid! It only made sense to return that experience to today’s LUM Campers.

Aly

Nicole

As a LUM Camp Counselor of seven years, not only have I been able to experience the joys of camp alongside children in need, but I also have found a career in social work.

LUM Camp is truly an amazing opportunity for youth to see their own worth and have the fun they deserve.

All year I look forward to being a LUM camp counselor.

God has blessed me with this opportunity to be a happy moment in the lives of these children. My heart swells when a former camper becomes a counselor — it proves the power of positive experiences.
