Meet Nancy – New LUM Business Office Clerk

Nancy L. Emig – LUM Clerk – Business Office

Nancy L. Emig is the new clerk, responsible for assisting the LUM business office and working directly with the Good Samaritan Program.

Nancy grew up in Valparaiso, graduated from Valparaiso High School, and lives in West Lafayette with her husband, Greg, daughter, Carly, and their three furry children (dogs), Zoey, Abbey & Bayley. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in Supervision. Nancy enjoys being a mother, supporting her daughter’s activities, listening to music, traveling, golfing, watching Purdue sports and NFL games, loving her dogs, and helping her husband with their business venture/adventure. She is inspired by the quote,

As I look at my life, I would prefer to err on the side of GRACE rather than judgment,
To love too much rather than too little,
To believe in my sisters and brothers too much rather than not enough,
To believe the best and be wrong rather than believe the worst and be right.

Nancy started with LUM as a volunteer, serving more than five years, as an afternoon receptionist and with Jubilee Christmas, the Good Samaritan Program, and with her “reading” dog, Bayley, the After School Program. Nancy shared,

I am here to serve and give back to the community that has welcomed and been so gracious to my family. I hope to bring the same joy, a smile or sense of peace to just one person, my day is fulfilled.

LUM is fortunate to have had Nancy Emig as a volunteer and is thrilled to have her join the LUM staff. Please join us in welcoming her in her new role with the LUM team.

You must do what is right and fair.
You must be kind and show mercy to each other.
Don’t hurt widows and orphans, strangers, or poor people.
Don’t even think of doing bad things to each other!

Prior to LUM, Briton coordinated agency relations and community outreach for the local food bank, including overseeing the partner agency program and backpack program. He also has experience as a youth minister and an adult education and ESL teacher.

He is excited to be a part of the team at Lafayette Urban Ministry, Briton has a passion for helping people and leading others to do the same. So far has at LUM, he has enjoyed being able to “bring love to bear toward our neighbors in tangible and meaningful ways.” For fun, Briton enjoys spending time with his family, playing his guitar, reading and woodworking.

A Focus on the Students in the LUM 5th Quarter Program
Summer 2015

As the school year begins, the teachers with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program are confident that our students are better prepared than their peers to succeed. During this ten week summer program, the trained staff create an academically stimulating environment for our students to learn during the summer months —
which includes active learning, educational enrichment activities and study trips.

During their final week of 5th Quarter last week, the students’ schedule was filled with special trips and events. They swam in the Vinton pool, picked up their free book at Barnes & Noble Bookstore for participating in their Summer Reading program, enjoyed a guided educational tour of the Soilmaker facility (pictured above), and had some fun with the Covenant Church Youth Group at Columbian Park. Each 5th Quarter student also took a post-test during the final week.

The results of the post-test will soon be compared to their pre-test scores and a control group to help measure our success and guide our curriculum decisions in the future.
