Meet Briton – New LUM Shelter Director

Briton Weise, LUM Emergency Shelter Director

Briton M. Weise is the new program director for LUM Homeless Services. He is responsible for the LUM Emergency Shelter and the Winter Warming Station.

Briton grew up in Otterbein, Indiana, and married his high school sweetheart, Kendyl. Kendyl is the guidance director at Central Catholic High School (Lafayette), and they now live in Lafayette with their nine-month-old son, Bowen. They are members of Covenant Church (West Lafayette), and Briton is active with the music ministry. A graduate of Benton Central High School (Otterbein), Briton earned a bachelor’s degree from Taylor University (Upland) in Christian Education and anticipates finishing his Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University this fall.

Briton finds inspiration in his faith, especially this Bible passage from the Lord to Zechariah:

You must do what is right and fair.
You must be kind and show mercy to each other.
Don’t hurt widows and orphans, strangers, or poor people.
Don’t even think of doing bad things to each other!

Prior to LUM, Briton coordinated agency relations and community outreach for the local food bank, including overseeing the partner agency program and backpack program. He also has experience as a youth minister and an adult education and ESL teacher.

He is excited to be a part of the team at Lafayette Urban Ministry, Briton has a passion for helping people and leading others to do the same. So far has at LUM, he has enjoyed being able to “bring love to bear toward our neighbors in tangible and meaningful ways.” For fun, Briton enjoys spending time with his family, playing his guitar, reading and woodworking.

LUM is fortunate to have Briton Weise join the LUM staff. Please join us in welcoming him to the LUM team.

Covenant Church Youth Group Serves LUM

2015-08-06 Covenant 002 (2) (640x640)Members of the Covenant Church Youth Group engaged with the students enrolled in the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program. Covenant’s Youth Group spent the afternoon reading, playing indoor and outdoor games, and taking a trip to Columbian Park to explore, play, and learn.

This was a special treat for the LUM 5th Quarter students. Thanks to the Covenant Church Youth Group for spending part of their summer with the LUM 5th Quarter students.

As the school year begins, the teachers with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program are confident that our students are better prepared than their peers to succeed. During this ten week summer program, the trained staff create an academically stimulating environment for our students to learn during the summer months —
which includes active learning, educational enrichment activities and study trips.

During their final week of 5th Quarter last week, the students’ schedule was filled with special trips and events. They swam in the Vinton pool, picked up their free book at Barnes & Noble Bookstore for participating in their Summer Reading program, enjoyed a guided educational tour of the Soilmaker facility (pictured above), and had some fun with the Covenant Church Youth Group at Columbian Park. Each 5th Quarter student also took a post-test during the final week.

The results of the post-test will soon be compared to their pre-test scores and a control group to help measure our success and guide our curriculum decisions in the future.
