Sponsor A Local Child for LUM Camp 2021

Camperships Offer Life-Changing Experience

A typical week of LUM Camp involves nature hikes, arts and crafts, boating, swimming, morning chapel, wall climbing, zip-lining, the giant swing, snacks, delicious meals, and diverse and caring counselors. LUM knows first-hand what has been verified by scientific research: a week of camp has tremendous benefits for the campers’ social skills, gross and fine motor skills, intellectual curiosity, positive values, spirituality, and overall positive identity. These benefits of a camp experience are shown to persist throughout a lifetime. This is why Lafayette Urban Ministry has hosted a camp every summer since the 1960’s.

LUM Camp is a scholarship-based camp, meaning we only invite children whose parents are not able to pay for the actual cost of camp. (The actual cost is more than $200 per camper.) Campers’ parents to pay $5 per child, and LUM needs donors like you to cover the rest. Won’t you please consider a gift to support the LUM Youth Programs and send a child to LUM Camp? Here is how your gift impacts our children:

  • $200 = sponsor one LUM camper
  • $400 = sponsor two LUM campers
  • $100 = ½ LUM Camp sponsorship
  • Any amount will support LUM Youth Programs

Your camp sponsorship will help pay for a child’s transportation, room and board, camp activities, educational programs and supplies – everything she or he will need to attend LUM Camp 2021. And THANK YOU!

Planning for LUM Summer Camp Has Begun

Dear Friends,

I remember the fear in the eyes of an 8-year-old girl as she tried the zip-line for the first time in her life. We zoomed over the creek and trees, her eyes wide. As we reached the ground, she gave me a high-five. Then, with a whole new confidence in those eyes, she walked up the hill to get in line for another turn.

Last year, in spite of all the risks and complications caused by the pandemic, LUM Camp still happened and was a huge success. More than 40 children had the time of their lives, even while wearing their face masks. Personally, it was the best week of my first year as the LUM executive director. As I experienced for myself last summer, LUM Camp is one the finest overnight summer camp programs available to children anywhere. With so many children eagerly awaiting their chance to attend, would you please invest in both their long-term life skills and their short-term fun by offering them the gift of LUM Camp

With gratitude,

Wes Tillett
Executive Director

P.S.  It costs $150 to send a child to LUM Camp.  Contribute online (click button below) or place your campership in the mail (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette, IN 47901).

This Year’s Theme – “Join the Green Side”

LUM Camp is a weeklong overnight camp for boys and girls, ages 8, 9, and 10.  The children come from families served by Lafayette Urban Ministry.  A typical week of LUM Camp involves nature hikes, arts and crafts, boating, swimming, morning chapel, climbing, zip-lining, delicious meals, and a top-of-the-line array of staff and counselors.

LUM Camp 2020’s theme is “Join the Green Side” (“May the forest be with you…”) and will take place the last week of July.  LUM will focus on teaching children to care for their neighbors by caring for the environment (the planet) in which their neighbors must live.

Camp is A Blast! The Best Week of the Summer!

LUM Camp is A BLAST!

All these positive changes are happening while children are having the time of their lives.  Many children describe LUM Camp as “the best week of my summer,” sometimes even “the best week of my life!”

LUM has always known that camp is extraordinarily beneficial.  That’s why LUM has hosted a camp every summer since the 1960’s.  And in spite of all the uncertainties caused by COVID-19, LUM is committed to hosting camp once again this summer at Hanging Rock Camp, where staff continues to work with local, state and CDC guidelines.  LUM Camp might have to look a little different due to Coronavirus, but the fun and friendship and life-enhancing benefits will remain the same.

Camp is Life-Giving & Life-Changing

Consider for a moment these amazing realities of almost all camp experiences.

LUM Camp is LIFE-GIVING.

The benefits of camp to those children who attend are well-documented and rather staggering:

  • positive identity
  • social skills
  • physical and thinking skills
  • positive values and spirituality

LUM Camp is LIFE-CHANGING.

Not only is there immediate, measurable growth in each of those four developmental areas for nearly every camper, that growth persists and expands for months and years afterwards.

LUM Campfire Stories from Joe Micon

LUM Camp provides the tools children need to navigate the challenges of growing up,” Joe Micon says. “Camp is such a fun and supportive place. Campers make new friends, experience new activities and are exposed to a world of possibility. As the week progresses, you can literally see each child grow in confidence.”

Here are a few stories he recently shared with Joan Low, LUM Board President:

  • One year Joe heard the Olympic torch was passing through Indiana. He moved heaven & earth to arrange for the torch to come to LUM Camp. Each camper got to lift the torch high over their head and feel like a real Olympian!
  • Another year, LUM Camp became Ag Camp, and Joe arranged for tractors, implements, and all manner of farm animals to visit. Each camper got to gaze down from the seat of a giant combine that was as big as a house. Pictured above.
  • The year that LUM Camp focused on aviation and the science of flight, each camper got to fly in an airplane, see their house and school from the air, and experience our community from a fresh new perspective. Somehow, Joe even convinced the LUM Board that flying in a plane was actually safer than driving in a car.
  • One former LUM camper played the snare drum in the President’s Old Guard Fife & Drum Corp after being exposed to the snare at LUM Camp. Joe remembers watching him march & perform on TV during President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Parade.

Every morning the children are beckoned from their beds by the sights and sounds of the forest and the experience of chapel around a campfire. At chapel they learn love of neighbor and respect for creation. They hear scripture stories about God’s love for them and justice for all his children. After breakfast they have a full day of hiking, riding horses, boating, swimming, entertainment, and art. LUM Camp is known for its great food, outstanding facilities, experienced staff & counselors, and all the singing, skits, and activities to form fond memories of fun, learning, and challenge.
We hope that this year you will give, not only for our campers, but also in honor of Joe’s 40 years of service to them. Over four decades, Joe has touched the lives of 4,000 at-risk children. Please, won’t you give a local child the gift of LUM Camp?
