LUM Staff Spotlight: Melissa K. Martin

Melissa K. Martin serves as the Assistance Programs director at Lafayette Urban Ministry, bringing with her an incredible 28-year connection to LUM—as a Jubilee Christmas volunteer and coordinator, board member, and now staff member. Her journey reflects a deep and enduring commitment to serving others and strengthening our community.

Melissa lives in West Lafayette. She graduated from Harrison High School (West Lafayette), earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Hanover College, and holds a CPA license. She brings extensive experience in the financial sector, including work with local nonprofit organizations and Purdue University. She is also an active member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, where she has served as the Jubilee Christmas Coordinator.

Melissa is a proud mother of four adult children—Nicole, Kristen, Allie, and Daniel—and describes this season of life as one of growth and change, grounded by the people who walk alongside her. In addition to time with her family, she enjoys reading and spending time outdoors whenever she can.

Her personal motto, “Be kind anyway”—a phrase so meaningful to her that she has it tattooed on her arm—guides both her life and her work. She is especially inspired by quiet, unrecognized acts of kindness, where compassion is extended simply because it matters.

Her favorite Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11—“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”—reflects her deep belief in hope and purpose.

At LUM, Melissa oversees the Financial Assistance Program, ID Clinic, and Jubilee Christmas. She is also leading the development of a new initiative—Resource Navigation—which will expand LUM’s ability to connect individuals with the services and support they need.

Melissa shares that her years of involvement with Jubilee Christmas have been especially meaningful, noting that she often feels more blessed by the experience than those receiving support. In her role, she looks forward to building relationships with clients throughout the year and offering help and encouragement during difficult times.

LUM is truly fortunate to welcome someone with Melissa’s talent, experience, and heart for service to the program team. She is proud to be part of an organization known as “a lifeline of help and hope,” a mission that resonates deeply with her sense of purpose and the impact she hopes to make.
