The Hermodsons: Generosity in Action as LUM Legacy Partners

For nearly five decades, Mark and Susan Hermodson have been pillars of support for Lafayette Urban Ministry — giving their time, talent, and resources to help strengthen the community they’ve called home since 1977. Today, they are proud LUM Legacy Partners, ensuring that their commitment to serving others will continue to make a difference for generations to come.

Susan, a St. Olaf College alumna, has long been an active LUM volunteer, sharing her time and compassion in service to others. She also served as Assistant to the Bishop of the Indiana/Kentucky Synod – ELCA, further demonstrating her commitment to leadership and service in the community. Mark, who also earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College, continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin, earning a PhD in Biochemistry, and completed post-doctoral research at the University of Washington. He is a retired Professor of Biochemistry at Purdue University, where he also served as Department Head and later as Interim Associate Dean of Agriculture. Together, Mark & Susan have dedicated themselves to causes that uplift and empower the community, including Mark’s role on the LUM Capital Campaign (2008–2010).

Married since 1968, the Hermodsons are members of Our Saviour Lutheran Church and strong supporters of Purdue Lutheran Ministry. Their daughters, Amy and Gail, continue the family tradition of service. Reflecting on their journey, Mark & Sue shared:

“We believe in the collective action of many churches to achieve a major impact on homelessness and poverty. LUM’s areas of focus are very well-chosen, making the time and money well spent.”

As proud LUM Legacy Partners, Mark and Susan are ensuring that their compassion and generosity will continue to bless the community in perpetuity. Their story is a reminder that you, too, can leave a Legacy of Love & Hope through LUM. By including LUM in your estate plans—through a bequest, retirement account, appreciated stock, or other form of gift—you can help ensure that LUM’s mission of providing shelter, nourishment, and hope endures for generations.
