The Shockeys: Investing in Eternal Impact as LUM Legacy Partners

Bob Shockey and his wife Diane – most recently from Michigan–now reside in West Lafayette, Indiana. They are proud parents of three adult children—Elizabeth in Charlotte, NC; Sarah in Janesville, WI; and David in West Lafayette– and proud grandparents of four boys.

Bob and Diane have been dedicated volunteers with Lafayette Urban Ministry for more than six years. Bob currently serves as the president of the LUM Board of Directors. In addition to serving on the Board and Executive Council, Bob is a member of the Development Committee, previously chaired the Buildings & Grounds Committee, and volunteered at the LUM Emergency Shelter. Diane also contributes her time and expertise to LUM as a volunteer with the Financial Assistance Program.

Their long-term involvement with LUM has inspired Bob and Diane to become LUM Legacy Partners. Reflecting on their giving, Bob shared,

By investing in the poor and disenfranchised—what I call LUM’s ‘sweet spot’—Diane and I are able to align our resources with God’s priorities, as outlined in Matthew 25:34-40 and Proverbs 19:17. These investments yield eternal dividends, a seed that continues to grow long after we’re gone. From an eternal perspective, it’s difficult to find a better investment.

Bob and Diane met as undergraduates at Case Western Reserve University, where they both earned bachelor’s degrees. Bob went on to earn an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University and serves as Senior Business Manager in the Garden Division of Smurfit WestRock. Diane is a retired kindergarten teacher who now serves as Database Administrator at Covenant Church. In addition to her work at the church, she enjoys supporting their three local grandsons and volunteering with LUM. Beyond LUM, Bob and Diane enjoy reading, hiking, biking, and adventure travel. They love Italy and savoring Italian culture and cuisine, with Bob delighting in learning the language.

The Shockey family legacy is one of faith and service. Their children have pursued meaningful careers in education, ministry, and nonprofit work, reflecting the values instilled by Bob and Diane. They encourage others to engage with LUM, noting:

“There is immense personal satisfaction in making a tangible difference for people, who are God’s children – immortal souls who will outlast corporations, civilizations, and Earth itself.”

Through their commitment as LUM Legacy Partners, Bob and Diane Shockey are able to continue to make a lasting impact on LUM and the Greater Lafayette community—planting seeds that will bear fruit for generations to come.

LUM is thankful for the generosity and vision of LUM Legacy Partners, Bob and Diane Shockey.
