LUM Cooling Station Offers Sanctuary During Heatwave
A Cool Safe Space for the Local Un-housed
During the recent heatwave, the LUM Cooling Station at the LUM Office emerged as a vital sanctuary for the unhoused community. Operating from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., it provided much-needed respite from the oppressive heat. However, the station’s offerings extended far beyond the relief of cool air. Visitors were provided with essential amenities such as clean water, simple meals, hygiene supplies, and new socks. Bathroom facilities were also available to ensure comfort and cleanliness. The LUM Cooling Station will open each weekday this summer that the feels like temperature hits 100 degrees F.
More importantly, the LUM Cooling Station created a welcoming environment that nurtured a sense of community among its visitors. It was not just a place to cool down; it was a space where individuals could feel valued and supported. The station’s atmosphere of compassion and care helped to rekindle a sense of dignity and restore hope to those who are often marginalized and overlooked. By addressing both physical needs and emotional well-being, the LUM Cooling Station played a crucial role in supporting the unhoused during the challenging heatwave.
Please consider investing in the LUM Cooling Station by making a donation to or volunteering with LUM Homeless Services, donating Needed Items or preparing bagged To-Go Meals. (See below for more information about the LUM To-Go Meals Program).
