The purpose of the LUM Cooling Station for the unhoused is to provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals experiencing homelessness can seek relief from extreme heat and adverse weather conditions. The LUM Cooling Station is especially important during hot summer months when high temperatures can pose serious health risks to vulnerable populations without access to air-conditioned spaces.

The LUM Cooling Station will open each weekday that the feels-like temperature hits 100 degrees F.

The primary goals of the LUM Cooling Station include:

  1. Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses: Extreme heat can lead to heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and other health issues. The LUM Cooling Station offer a place for unhoused individuals to escape the heat and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
  2. Offering Basic Comforts: The LUM Cooling Station provides cool air, water, and a comfortable place to rest. These basic amenities are vital for maintaining physical well-being and preventing dehydration.
  3. Reducing Health Risks: Individuals experiencing homelessness often lack access to regular medical care, making them more susceptible to heat-related health complications. The LUM Cooling Station acts as a temporary refuge, lessening the strain on healthcare services.
  4. Promoting Dignity and Respect: By providing a space where individuals can freshen up, change clothes, and interact with caring volunteers, the LUM Cooling Station helps restore a sense of dignity and self-worth to unhoused individuals.
  5. Fostering Community: The LUM Cooling Station serves as gathering points where people facing similar challenges can connect, share experiences, and provide mutual support. This sense of community can help combat feelings of isolation.
  6. Raising Awareness: The LUM Cooling Station also raises awareness about the challenges faced by the unhoused population and the need for comprehensive solutions to homelessness.
  7. Linking to Services: The LUM Cooling Station collaborates with social service agencies to connect unhoused individuals with essential resources such as housing assistance, medical care, mental health services, and employment opportunities.

In essence, The LUM Cooling Station goes beyond providing a physical respite from the heat. It addresses the holistic well-being of unhoused individuals by offering relief, safety, and the opportunity for connections that can lead to positive change in their lives.
