Cole students pack food and messages of kindness
120 Meals for Guests of the LUM Winter Warming Station
“Be brave; dream big” and “have a good holiday” are among the positive messages second grade students at Cole Elementary School created on lunch bags that they filled with food for people in our community who are experiencing homelessness. They packed more than 120 sack lunches for Lafayette Urban Ministry to distribute to guests at the Winter Warming Station and Emergency Shelter.
Teacher Tracey Harris says parents generously donated the items for the bagged meals including ready-to-eat tuna packs, applesauce, granola bars and chips. “This goes along with our school’s mission statement to grow kind citizens,” says Harris. “We hope this will have a ripple effect of spreading kindness as we head into the holiday season.”
Student Christopher Myers drew a candy cane on one of his bags. “I hope they will look at my picture and love it,” says Christopher.
Student Delaynie Haywood colored a snowman on her bag with the message “live, laugh and love.” “I hope they think it’s beautiful,” says Delaynie. “We learned it is important to help others. It made me feel happy.”
Teacher Jen Tilley hopes students will see that a small act of kindness is important and no matter their age they can make a difference: “Even though they are little, they can help in big ways.”
