The Impact of the LUM Shelter This Winter

LUM Is Seeing People’s Needs & Meeting Them

A man approached me as I left the LUM office, already running late to pick up my daughter from basketball practice. He looked disheveled, tired, and cold.

  • “Is the shelter open?” he inquired. I tried to be polite, helpful and brief — offering information about the LUM Winter Warming Station.
  • “Do you have a hat or gloves?” I asked. “No. Neither does my wife,” he stated.
  • “Where are you staying for the next couple hours?” I asked. “We are at the bus station.”

Relieved that they had a warm place to go for the time being, I hurried back inside to grab two hats and two pairs of gloves. He gratefully received them and began walking back toward the bus station — but now with a hat on his head, gloves on his hands, and a warm place for him and his wife to sleep for the night. That night I was the last parent to pick up my daughter from basketball practice. I felt sorry about that; but, even more, I felt grateful to be part of an organization that sees people’s needs and meets them.

This story is not about me but about Lafayette Urban Ministry — and about YOU. Your compassionate generosity is what provides the means for LUM to be able to address basic human needs such as shelter, food, clothing and more. Thank you. In 2021, LUM provided assistance 18,250 times through more than 20 different LUM programs and events. With the support of people like you, LUM continues to provide life-giving, life-changing assistance to our neighbors in need, every day and every night. Please consider a gift today to the LUM Emergency Shelter. Your intentional kindness is a blessing to all.

With joy and gratitude,
