When asked about her experience both as a client and volunteer, Mrs. Asad commented,

“I found the  LUM/LARA citizenship class and the guidance I received from the LUM Immigration Clinic to be extremely helpful in preparing for the naturalization exam.  I am very pleased to be associated with the clinic as both a client and now as a volunteer.  It is a great resource to those in the community, especially native Spanish speakers, who have been here for many years and needed additional encouragement and support to apply for citizenship.  The service provided LUM immigration clinic and the LUM/LARA citizenship class are priceless.”

Since opening in August 2014, the LUM Immigration Clinic has helped clients petition for their relatives, become permanent residents, renew their green cards, apply for citizenship, and obtain protection from abusers.  The clinic has reunited family members and helped young people follow their dreams in addition answering questions regarding tourist visas and student visas.   Finally the clinic has begun offering citizenship classes in partnership with the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy to offer citizenship classes and also partners with the Purdue Ayuda y Aprende program to offer basic Spanish conversation classes.

Reflecting on the accomplishments of the past two years, Joe Micon, Executive Director of Lafayette Urban Ministry, stated

“In the midst of all this, it is important for us to stop and celebrate each time one of our clients takes her oath of citizenship as an new US citizen.  To Daleth and the others who will be sworn in at the naturalization ceremony on Friday: Welcome to America the Beautiful.  May her blessings of equal opportunity be bestowed upon you.  May you serve her and enjoy both the rights and responsibilities of her freedom.”
