TAX Assistance – Volunteers Needed

This year due to strict COVID-19 protocols, the LUM Tax Assistance Program needs more volunteers than usual.

LUM has developed a “no contact” plan to get taxes done, and volunteers are needed. Many of our clients will be getting their tax information to us online. However, there will be plenty of clients who lack either the technology or the confidence to do that. LUM is offering “no contact” sessions every weekend from February through April where clients can drop off their materials and get them scanned. All interactions with clients will happen through a glass door using a drop slot to collect materials.

The LUM Tax Assistance Program needs volunteers to help:

  • Verify client IDs and collect their documents
  • Scan their documents and get them uploaded to a secure site

Tax time can be scary, and without the normal in-person tax clinics that our clients are so used to, this year is likely to be scarier than most. YOU can make things a little easier, and provide a valuable service to the struggling families who rely on LUM to get their taxes done. If you would like to find out more, please email the Tax Assistance program manager, Josh Prokopy, at jprokopy@lumserve.org.

Youth Groups — Service Day at LUM

heartland

Last Thursday, the Heartland Community Church Youth Group (FYSH) and Battle Ground United Methodist Church Youth Group (Larger than Life) assisted in cleaning the LUM emergency shelter and office building as well as gardening and outdoor chores. One group worked with the 5th Quarter students to harvest their garden—and all of the fresh produce was donated to the St. John’s/LUM Food Pantry. To view more PHOTOs, click HERE.

This was part of their 4th annual Mission Lafayette service week, where a group of middle and high school students work together to serve the local community. Their goal is to give these young adults an opportunity to grow their faith through service work in their home town.

LUM is very thankful for the help from these two hard-working youth groups. LUM relies on groups like these to get most of our outside work done.

If your group is interested in helping out with yard-work or mowing the lawns, please email or call us (lum@lumserve.org | 765-423-2691).

This past Tuesday, 45 “fellows” from the Benjamin Franklin Summer Institute at Purdue spent the morning learning about and volunteering at Lafayette Urban Ministry.

The 2015 Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Summer Institute is held June 27-July 20150714_103539 (2) goldborder25 on the campus of Purdue University, West Lafayette. Ten U.S. Fellows (aged 16 to 18) join 36 international Fellows from Europe for 18 days in the summer to learn about US culture and democracy as well as from each other. The Ben Franklin Summer Institute is directed by Anatoli Rappaport, associate professor of Curriculum & Instruction in the College of Education at Purdue.

20150714_103750 (2) goldborderOn this day, the fellows learned about the programs & services offered by LUM and our partnership with 42 member churches on behalf of working families and at-risk children. The students engaged in various projects to clean and enhance LUM in both of our buildings and all of our grounds. They also assisted in the removal of our last ornamental pear tree.

LUM extends sincere appreciation to all of the Ben Franklin Institute students for their interest in and service to Lafayette Urban Ministry.
