LUM Volunteer Spotlight – Chase

For the past two years, Chase Jenquin has been a driving force behind the Lafayette Urban Ministry Food Rescue Initiative, bringing dedication, creativity, and a collaborative spirit to work that directly strengthens our community.

Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Chase is currently a PhD student in Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University. His academic path includes a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from NC State University and a master’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue. While his studies reach toward the stars, Chase’s volunteer work keeps him firmly grounded in meeting real, everyday needs here in Greater Lafayette.

Chase began volunteering with LUM in May 2024 and now serves as the Food Rescue Coordinator. In this role, he helps ensure that surplus food from local partners is quickly and efficiently redirected to people who need it most—reducing food waste while increasing access to nutritious food.

What stands out most to Chase about LUM is the people.

“LUM is a very positive organization, and all of the volunteers selflessly work together to make the greatest impact we can,” he shares.

Chase is continually inspired by how readily volunteers step up—often on short notice—to support Food Rescue and the Food Pantry. That collective commitment motivates him to give his best and to think proactively about how the programs can grow and improve.

Chase appreciates that LUM is never complacent. He describes the organization as one that is constantly asking how it can do better and reach further.

“No one is satisfied with where we are,” he notes. “Everyone is thinking creatively about how we can improve our impact.”

For anyone considering volunteering, Chase offers a strong endorsement. He believes LUM truly lives out its commitment to helping the community and serving as a lifeline of help and hope. No matter a person’s background, schedule, or interests, he emphasizes that there is a meaningful way for everyone to contribute. For Chase, the most rewarding part is seeing the direct connection between his efforts and the difference they make in people’s lives.

LUM is grateful for volunteers like Chase Jenquin, whose energy, thoughtfulness, and teamwork help ensure our neighbors have access to the food and support they need.
