A Legacy of Faith: The Avery Trust
Celebrating 25 Years of the Averys’ Gift to LUM
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the generous estate gift of Arthur & Nanette Avery, $875,000 to Lafayette Urban Ministry, that continues to make a profound impact in our community. If the gift were to be given today, it would be worth approximately $1,690,000.
Friends and colleagues remember the Averys for their compassion, generosity, and dedication to others. Arthur, a WWII veteran and professor emeritus at Purdue University in the School of Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional & Tourism Management, served the university from 1969 to 1988 and earned several awards in food science. Nanette, a professional dietitian, devoted much of her time to volunteering, including with St. Elizabeth Auxiliary and LUM. Both Arthur & Nanette were members of St. Andrew United Methodist Church.
Tragically, the couple passed away following an automobile accident on Valentine’s Day 1998—Nanette after a coma on April 30 and Arthur on November 25. Despite their untimely deaths, their vision lives on.
LUM has used the Averys’ gift to enhance youth programs, support our unhoused neighbors, provide emergency financial assistance, and advocate for children from low-income families. Their gift reflects their belief that service to others is a central expression of faith.
As one colleague noted, “They saw their work here as an important part of their faith, and they wanted to see that work continued by those who came after them.”
Twenty-five years later, the Averys’ legacy continues to touch lives, reminding the community of the enduring power of generosity, faith, and commitment to others.
