LUM Winter Shelter Efforts Saved Lives
LUM Response to the Winter’s Toll on the Unhoused
The winter of 2024–2025 brought extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and gusting winds especially during Winter Storm Blair, making life especially dangerous for those experiencing homelessness. LUM ensured no one seeking shelter was left out in the cold. The LUM Winter Warming Station, open nightly from November to April, provided a safe, warm space for 401 individuals, totaling “a lot of” bed-nights. Guests received a meal, water, and a safe & warm place to sleep. LUM Homeless Services operated at full capacity most of the winter, serving more than 90 guests each night.
LUM Homeless Services partnered with LTHC Homeless Services, the City of Lafayette, and local law enforcement to expand emergency shelter capacity. An additional LTHC-run warming space ensured more than a total of 125 individuals had refuge in Greater Lafayette. “This is something few cities in the U.S. have accomplished—guaranteeing that no one is left out in the cold,” said Wes Tillett, LUM executive director.
The success of LUM Homeless Services is due to the dedication of the LUM staff members and volunteers, and the generosity of families, groups, businesses, and churches who donate and provide meals. Their compassion saved lives. LUM remains committed to providing warmth, safety, and hope — and invites the community to continue supporting this vital mission.
