Urgent Winter Shelter Expansion Effort
Community Partners Ensure Warm Shelter for All
During Arctic Blast
With an arctic blast bringing dangerously cold temperatures and wind to our area, Lafayette Urban Ministry, the City of Lafayette LTHC Homeless Services, and other agencies, has taken swift action to ensure no one is left without shelter this week—and hopefully for the remainder of the winter.
During the last extreme cold spell, the LUM Emergency Shelter (48 beds) was full, and the Winter Warming Station exceeded its capacity of 44 mats, sheltering up to 62 unsheltered adults each night. In total, more than 100 individuals experiencing homelessness sought refuge each night, highlighting a growing crisis.
Three years ago in the LUM Winter Warming Station, 20 floor mats were enough. Last winter, the WWS expanded to a larger location with 44 floor mats, which comfortably met demand. This winter, however, demand has surged beyond expectations. In response, LUM Executive Director Wes Tillett collaborated with the City of Lafayette & Police Department and LTHC Homeless Services to develop an emergency overflow plan.
A Community-Wide Effort
Thanks to the commitment of local leaders, staff, and volunteers, an additional overflow warming space was established in LTHC Homeless Services’ Day Room, staffed by LTHC personnel. This expansion—along with LUM Shuttle Buses transporting those in need—ensures that everyone experiencing homelessness has access to a warm and safe place to sleep.
“This is something few cities in the U.S. have accomplished—guaranteeing that no one is left out in the cold,” said Wes Tillett, LUM executive director. “This was possible because our community prioritizes collaboration and support year-round, making it possible to mobilize in times of crisis.”
How You Can Help
Addressing homelessness—especially in extreme weather—is hard but necessary work. It is a responsibility we all share. LTHC and LUM need your support to sustain these lifesaving efforts.
- Donate: Monetary gifts help cover shelter expenses, supplies, and staff wages.
- Volunteer: Help prepare and serve meals, or assist at the shelters.
- Give Supplies: Warm clothing, hygiene products, and non-perishable food items are in high demand.
The most vulnerable—particularly older adults—depend on us. Please join us in this effort to ensure that no one in our community suffers in the cold.
