Meet Jeffrey – New LUM Shelter Director

Jeffrey Auguste, LUM Emergency Shelter Director

Jeffrey Auguste is the new program director for LUM Homeless Services. He is responsible for the LUM Emergency Shelter and the Winter Warming Station.

Jeffrey grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and currently lives in Lafayette, IN. His mother, father and two younger brothers also live in Lafayette. Jeffrey graduated from Jefferson High School and earned an associate degree in Human Services from Ivy Tech Community College. He is currently enrolled at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis pursuing a bachelor degree in Social Work. His goal is to complete his Master of Social Work by 2025.

Jeffrey shared that when he needs guidance he re-reads the Book of Proverbs. As he begins his new role with LUM, Jeffrey is inspired by this simple yet powerful passage:

“The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit”

Proverbs 18:21

He stated that, “It’s easy to judge others when you’re angry, guilty and even when you’re happy. We all must be self-aware, learning to recognize these triggers and quickly act accordingly by treating others with respect and dignity.”

Jeffrey has experience with nonprofit management and working with youth and adults with behavioral and mental health issues. At LUM, Jeffrey served as an intern with the Emergency Shelter in 2019, a volunteer camp counselor at LUM Camp in 2020, and volunteered with Jubilee Christmas. He is proud to now be a member of the LUM leadership team stating that,

“Being able to make an impact in my community and help LUM move further toward its strategic goals gives me great pride. I intend to help our shelter guests by welcoming them and offering a safe place to sleep, while working with them to get housed. I will be supportive of the shelter team and lead them into an improved system.”

Jeffrey’s personal mission is to “help give back hope and offer a glimmer of light to those who are under-served, allowing them to believe in a better future for themselves and their families.” His home country inspires him to be the best he can be everyday. He shared that, “I grew up with the saying, ‘Work is Freedom.'” Jeffrey has a clear plan for his career and is continually looking for opportunities to learn and grow. He stated that, “The journey has been great so far, and I am excited to help others do the same, inspiring and motivating them to follow their dreams.”

For fun, Jeffrey enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and outdoor activities. He also plays soccer, basketball and football. LUM is fortunate to have Jeffrey Auguste join the LUM staff. Please join us in welcoming him to the LUM team.
