From Shelter to Stability:
How Your Support Transformed Ernie’s Life

Because of you, Ernie found hope when life felt impossible. After multiple personal and family losses, he arrived at the LUM Emergency Shelter in June 2024 with a serious heart condition, no income, and no access to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Ernie needed time, guidance, and support to regain stability. From day one, he showed up with a positive spirit, helping other guests, assisting staff, and taking on daily chores, while working with LUM to discern his next steps.

Through your generosity, Lafayette Urban Ministry fulfilled its mission: meeting basic human needs, offering financial assistance, and inspiring hope. With mentoring, encouragement from local ministries, and practical support from LUM, Ernie applied for, interviewed for, and was offered a live-in caretaker position at a partner agency serving unhoused families. In November 2025, he was housed, employed, thriving, and focused on building a better life. Ernie is on track not only to stay housed but to achieve so much more. The potential is limitless.
