LUM Board Honors Franciscan Health

25 Year Gift of Linens to the LUM Shelter

The Board of Directors of the Lafayette Urban Ministry recently honored Franciscan Health for the hospital’s annual donation of 12,000 sets of sheets, blankets and pillowcases to the Lafayette Urban Ministry Emergency Shelter for the homeless. The hospital has been providing clean linens for the homeless for 25 years.

Sister Petra Nielsen, Vice President Administrative Services & Rick Bremer, Director of Environmental Services, attended the meeting to accept the recognition and commemorative plaque on behalf of Franciscan Health. The total value of the in-kind donation to LUM is approximately $250,000 (an estimated in-kind value of about $10,000 per year).

Joe Micon, LUM executive director stated, “It’s one of those common things that nobody thinks too much about. But if you’re going to provide the homeless with a place to sleep, you have to make sure that place is clean and warm. Our partnership with Franciscan Health has been a real Godsend. We just wanted a chance to say ‘thank you’ publicly and felt the community should know about their generosity.”

Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the laundry service from Franciscan Health drops off clean sheets to the LUM Emergency Shelter and takes the used sheets to be cleaned. “It’s been happening routinely for 25 years,” says Micon. “We want to be careful not to take this tremendous gift for granted. I can’t imagine what we would do if Franciscan Health wasn’t willing to step up to plate in this way.”

TSC Students Collect Needed Items for LUM

Burnett Creek Elementary’s “Joy of Socks” & more…

Recently the Kindergarten classes at Burnett Creek Elementary School and the 4th & 5th grade classes at Battle Ground Elementary School made a donation of “needed items” to Lafayette Urban Ministry.

The Battle Ground students collected food, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products, and a new coffee maker for the LUM Emergency Shelter. LUM shelter director, David Heckert, visited the students at their school to collect these much needed items.

The Kindergarten students from all six classes at Burnett Creek researched what is the “most needed item” by the homeless, and discovered that the answer is…SOCKS. They watched a segment of Kid President who shared his story of doing a sock drive — and their collection drive called “Joy of Socks” was launched. Jade Laux and her mom delivered the socks to LUM and presented them to LUM executive director, Joe Micon. {Pictured above is Jade Laux & Joe Micon.}

How very fortunate we are to have students and teachers who think of the less fortunate individuals in our county — and take action to make a positive difference in their lives. Thanks again to the wonderful students at both Battle Ground & Burnett Creek Elementary Schools (Tippecanoe School Corporation).

Thanks Kolbi!

Kolbi P. (West Lafayette) recently celebrated her 5th birthday — and in lieu of presents she asked her friends to bring to her birthday party snacks for the “LUM students & children.”

Kolbi, a pre-kindergarten student at Federated Church Pre-school, donated a large supply of snack treats for the LUM After School Program. Thanks to Kolbi, her friends and her parents (Kandi & Gerad), for this generous gift to LUM. What a remarkable girl!

Thanks to every group, company, church and individual who have recently donated “needed items” to one or more LUM program.
