The Moment
The screening of Beyond the Bridge: A Solution to Homelessness marked a turning point for Greater Lafayette. The film and public dialogue that followed made clear both the urgency of homelessness in our community and a shared readiness to act.
While Greater Lafayette benefits from committed service providers, housing initiatives, faith communities, health and behavioral health partners, public agencies, businesses, and philanthropy, homelessness persists and grows more complex. This moment calls for a reset—greater coordination, alignment, and sustained leadership across sectors.
The Challenge
Rising housing costs, limited affordable units, fragmented systems, and unstable funding continue to strain our response. Without long-term coordination, gaps remain, resources are stretched, and progress is vulnerable to economic shifts, policy changes, and budget cuts.
Communities that achieve lasting progress align leadership, resources, and accountability around shared goals.
A Path Forward
In response to the momentum generated by the film event, the Beyond the Bridge Steering Committee is proposing the formation of a Greater Lafayette Task Force on Homelessness.
The Task Force would provide coordinated, cross-sector leadership focused on long-term solutions, not day-to-day operations. Its work would include:
- Establishing shared goals, measurable outcomes, and phased milestones
- Aligning efforts across government, housing, services, health and behavioral health, business, philanthropy, and faith communities
Identifying gaps, priorities, and opportunities for investment and policy change - Strengthening resilience against funding uncertainty, economic instability, and public health crises
- Tracking progress and reporting transparently to the community
Our Commitment
By signing this pledge, I/we:
- Affirm homelessness as a shared community responsibility
- Endorse the creation of a coordinated, cross-sector Task Force
- Commit to supporting a comprehensive, detailed community action plan
Pledge to engage constructively, align efforts, and sustain momentum over time
Will use our leadership, influence, and resources to help advance long-term solutions
This pledge signifies support for a broader call to action and an ongoing, detailed strategy to end homelessness in Greater Lafayette.
