LUM Bus Improves Emergency Shelter Access

Last week, Lafayette Urban Ministry hosted a blessing and unveiling of a new mobility-accessible bus designed to transport unhoused individuals with mobility challenges from the LTHC Homeless Services daytime resource center to the LUM Emergency Shelter. Although the two locations are just eight blocks apart, the distance can be difficult—or even dangerous in extreme weather—for guests with physical disabilities. This new LUM bus removes that barrier, offering safe, dignified, and consistent access to shelter beds.

More and more of our guests are older adults or individuals with health concerns,” said Wes Tillett, LUM executive director. “This bus allows us to meet them where they are and get them where they need to go.

The ceremony included remarks from community leaders, a blessing of the vehicle, and time for reflection and photos. The effort is a collaboration between LUM and LTHC Homeless Services, both of which have seen a growing need for services that accommodate guests with mobility limitations.

This partnership helps us remove a key barrier to shelter access—especially for those facing physical limitations,” said Jennifer Layton, LTHC president & CEO.

The mobility-accessible bus purchase was made possible through generous support from North Central Health Services, the Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette, and Old National Bank. With the addition of this new bus, LUM and LTHC reaffirm their shared commitment to serving unhoused neighbors with compassion, dignity, and care.
