LUM Intern Spotlight – Meet Dlina – Spring Intern
Introducing Dlina Gebre
Lafayette Urban Ministry is excited to introduce one of its outstanding spring interns, Dlina Gebre. Dlina grew up in Indianapolis, IN, with her parents, older brother & older sister, and their two pet budgies (birds). She graduated from Ben Davis High School and is set to graduate from Purdue University in May 2025 with a degree in Developmental and Family Sciences. Dlina brings her passion for community service and her dedication to supporting under-resourced families to her internship at LUM.
A Passion for Supporting Under-Resourced Families
Dlina has been interning with the LUM Financial Assistance Program and supported the LUM Tax Assistance Program for the past three months. She has embraced this opportunity to directly assist community members in Tippecanoe County.
“I hope to experience different demographics of community members and work with them directly to help assist them with their needs,” Dlina shares. “I want to learn a wide variety of resources that are offered for the individuals we serve so I can be well-educated to refer individuals to them.”
One of the aspects Dlina enjoys most about working at LUM is the people she interacts with daily.
“Being surrounded by staff and volunteers who really have compassion and the willingness to serve the community members with such great care is what I enjoy most,” she says. “I also appreciate how LUM strives to help individuals with resources beyond what LUM can personally provide.”
Future Goals and Interests
Outside of her academic and professional pursuits, Dlina enjoys spending time with family and friends, going on nature walks, and watching soccer. She is also actively involved with Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, where she co-leads a small group. Her family background is deeply rooted in Eritrean heritage, with cultural traditions and values passed down from her parents, both of whom were born in Eritrea. This rich heritage brings her joy in everyday life.
Looking ahead, Dlina plans to work with under-resourced families, possibly in a case management role in Indianapolis. Her time at LUM is equipping her with hands-on experience and valuable knowledge of community resources that will help her in her future career.
LUM appreciates Dlina’s dedication and hard work this spring and recognizes the bright future ahead for her. Thank you, Dlina, for your commitment to serving others.
