Meet Barb & John – LUM Volunteers of the Month
LUM Volunteers of the Month – January 2025
Lafayette Urban Ministry is thrilled to honor Barb & John Sperry as the Volunteers of the Month for January 2025. Residents of Brookston, Indiana, this couple embodies the spirit of service and compassion, making a positive impact on the LUM community.
A Shared Journey of Service
John, originally from Brownsburg, Indiana, graduated from Cardinal Ritter High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Purdue University as well as an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. Barb, from Sioux City, Iowa, is a proud graduate of East High School and Wayne State College in Nebraska, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business. They met during their time at Caterpillar, where John built a career in Supply Chain and Operations until retiring in 2016, while Barb left in 1990 to dedicate herself to raising their family.
Answering the Call to Volunteer
For close to three years, Barb & John have been loyal volunteers at the LUM Protein Food Pantry and part of the LUM Food Rescue team. Their motivation comes from a desire to honor God through their efforts.
“We wanted to volunteer where our efforts brought glory to God,” they shared. “LUM matches our values. We love that we can volunteer as a couple.”
A Deep Sense of Purpose
The Sperrys find pride in knowing their work helps feed the hungry while showing compassion to those in need. They describe their time in the food pantry as a true blessing.
“The clients we get to serve are so diverse and interesting. They’re from all walks of life. You really start caring for them as they let you learn their stories, share in their laughter, and occasionally their tears,” they explained. “We are also blessed to serve with a great group of volunteers who share our passion and are fun and loving. It truly is the highlight of our weeks!”
A Life Built on Love and Family
Married for 38 years, Barb & John are the proud parents of two sons and a daughter. In April, they will celebrate their granddaughter’s first birthday—a special occasion she shares with her grandpa John. When not volunteering, the Sperrys enjoy spending time with their children and granddaughter, reading, and tending to their yard. John also enjoys woodworking, crafting pieces that reflect his skill and creativity.
Making a Difference Together
For Barb & John, volunteering together at LUM is not just about the work—it’s about being part of something bigger.
“We LOVE that LUM is here serving the Lafayette community and are proud to be a small part of it,” they stated. “The commitment to people in need and sharing the Lord at critical points in their lives makes this a wonderful place to contribute our time, talents, and resources.”
LUM is grateful for Barb & John Sperry’s dedication and the kindness they bring to the LUM Protein Food Pantry and beyond. Their faith-driven service and warmth make them a special part of the LUM family. Join us in thanking John and Barb for their selflessness and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
