LUM Volunteer of the Month – Michael Brown
LUM Volunteer of the Month – October 2023
Michael A. Brown is the October LUM Volunteer of the Month.
Michael was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, but has lived in the Greater Lafayette area since he was three years old. He currently lives in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Michael has been actively involved with LUM for more than two and a half years. He serves on the LUM Board of Directors representing the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tippecanoe County and the Food Programs Review Committee. Michael also is the data-entry volunteer with the Westside Food Pantry and volunteers with the Food Rescue Program with his partner and “love of his life,” Jan. His remarkable dedication, passion for food assistance, leadership marked by good humor, and reliability have earned him the well-deserved honor of LUM Volunteer of the Month.
When reflecting on “what gives him the most pride in volunteering with LUM,” Michael shared that,
“LUM gives me a meaningful way to give something to my community and help folks who need it.”
He added that,
“It feels great to be able to help others. I know it’s a cliche, but I get so much more out of it than I put into it.”
Michael graduated from West Lafayette High School and earned a degree in Computer Science from Purdue University. After a 44-year career in IT with Purdue, he retired in 2020. Michael’s parents also have Purdue connections. They were Purdue graduates and met while with the Purdue Experimental Theatre. In his free time, Michael enjoys reading, mostly science and science fiction, and he and Jan love traveling and participating in local cultural activities together.
