LUM Volunteer of the Month – Duane Sellers

LUM Volunteer of the Month – September 2023

Duane Sellers is the September LUM Volunteer of the Month.

Duane Sellers

Duane was born in Dayton, Ohio, but spent most of his childhood in Rome, Georgia; Chester, Virginia, and Orchard Park, New York with stops in Baltimore and Cumberland, Maryland. He now lives in Lafayette with his wife and best friend, Jane. Duane graduated from Orchard Park High and earned a bachelor’s in Technical Theater from Purdue University. He is retired but is a consultant for office supply companies, repairs sewing machines, and maintains a couple of computer networks.

In observance of Hunger Action Month, Duane is receiving special recognition this month for his volunteer contributions. Duane has been actively involved with the Hunger Hike Fundraising Committee, has volunteered for Jubilee Christmas, and has consistently served meals at the Emergency Shelter. His outstanding commitment, impressive fundraising achievements, understated leadership, and unwavering reliability have earned him the distinction of being named the LUM Volunteer of the Month.

When reflecting on “what gives him the most pride in volunteering with LUM,” Duane shared that,

LUM provides caring support across a huge range of needs. LUM is an organization that truly puts the community first.

Jane, Duane, and their grandchildren

Duane has dedicated more than six years to the Hunger Hike leadership team, and he has been a committed fundraiser for even longer. One of the gratifying aspects of volunteering with LUM is that he can work alongside his closest companion and wife, Jane, as well as their children, grandchildren, and fellow members of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center. Duane stated,

Whatever your passion is for helping your neighbor, you can find that niche at LUM. They have SO MANY wonderful programs where volunteers are needed. The rewards you’ll reap from your involvement will exceed your expectations.

Duane & Jane have been married for 47 years and have two adult children (Kelly Stockton & Lori Ovenden) and six grandchildren. They are active members of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center (West Lafayette, IN); and Duane performs with the music ministry at Sunday Mass. In his free time, Duane enjoys hanging out with his family, woodworking, bicycling, playing music, and traveling.
