A Seasonal Message from Wes Tillett

Fasting is a key discipline within every major religion of the world – Lent,

Ramadan, Yom Kippur, etc. But why fast? Fasting is a way to reset our appetites and attention, to focus on something more significant than our bodily hunger.

The Jewish Scriptures teach in Isaiah 58:6-7 that true fasting is “to loose the chains of injustice…to share your food with the hungry, and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter.”

So, true fasting empowers us to look beyond our own desires long enough to see those who are in need of a helping hand of love – people whom Jesus identified as “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40) – people whom LUM serves every day and night.

May we all be people who practice true fasting – a lifestyle of justice and mercy toward the most vulnerable people around us. Through your commitment to LUM, you have proven your love for the least of usThank you for your friendship, and I hope to meet you at one of our upcoming events.
