COVID-19 Updates – Impact on LUM

The leadership at LUM has been continually monitoring the recommendations from the CDC, the county health department, local and state officials and other agencies. LUM is open for business, but “how” LUM serves the families in our community has been modified to keep everyone as safe as possible. A summary of services are as follows:

Details on how LUM continues to serve local families in our community are as follows:

Assistance Programs

  • Good Samaritan Program – online only
    • Complete online Financial Assistance Request form, click HERE
      • Submit all documentation through email to gsp@lumserve.org
      • If needed, LUM staff will email you to schedule a phone appointment, after all documentation has been submitted
      • PLEASE NOTE: Due to the high volume of requests you may not hear back immediately, but a staff member will email you as soon as they are able. Thanks for your patience.
    • If approved, LUM generally offers approximately $50, once every 30 days, up to $200 per household per year.
    • If request is COVID-19 related, more funds may be available for housing expenses
    • Prescriptions – must be ready for pick-up at your pharmacy
    • LUM will NOT give funds for doctor bills, car repairs, gasoline for cars, bus tokens, court or legal fees, bills not yet past due, and bills too large
    • LUM also offers referrals to other assistance programs

  • ID Clinic – by phone & by appointment only
    • Call the LUM Office (765-423-2691) on Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
  • Immigration Clinic – online & by appointment only
  • Jubilee Christmas (December 12) – More information will be available in October
  • Tax Assistance Program – beginning Feb. 2021

Food Programs

  •  Protein Food Pantry (525 N 4th Street, Lafayette)
    • Open – Thursdays, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.
    • CLIENTS
      • To-go, outside service only
      • Only one adult per family will be allowed to line up
      • Clients must line up six feet apart on the markers on the sidewalk
      • Clients must wear a mask or will be ask to leave and will not be served
    • DONATIONS
      • Protein food items, paper products, infant supplies & feminine hygiene products are needed and welcome.

      • Dropped off donations at the Protein Food Pantry (525 N 4th Street, Lafayette) on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
      • Other arrangements for drop off or pick up of donations may be made by emailing foodpantry@lumserve.org.

  • Community Thanksgiving Celebration (Thursday, November 26, Noon)
    • More information will be available in October

Youth Programs

  • After School Program (Now – June 2, 2021)
    • Complete Online Application TODAY — click HERE
    • WHO is eligible — children from kindergarten through 8th grade
    • Monday – Friday when school is in session from School dismissal time through 6 p.m.
    • Fees: Weekly = $35 per child or Monthly = $110 per child
    • Bus transportation provided from school to the LUM Ray Ewry Youth Center
    • CDC & state guidelines will be followed and exceeded
    • Follows the regular LSC school calendar
    • Location: LUM Ray Ewry Youth Center, 525 N 4th St., Lafayette, IN 47901
    • Donations of snacks and cleaning supplies are welcome and needed — click HERE
    • Volunteers needed each weekday afternoon — click HERE

Homeless Services

  • Emergency Shelter (525 N 4th Street, Lafayette, IN)
    • Intake – 1:30 p.m., LUM Office 420 N 4th Street, Lafayette
    • Guests, staff & volunteers must get temperature checked, wash hands (or disinfect) and wear masks before entering building
    • Staff & volunteers wear mask and face shield when working with guests
    • Social distancing during meal and while sleeping
    • CDC & state guidelines will be followed and exceeded
    • DONATIONS – Meals are needed every evening. Please consider preparing a meal for our shelter guests. To learn more and sign up online, please click HERE.
  • Winter Warming Station (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette, IN) – opens November 15

Although the LUM Office is closed for drop in visits, the LUM office phones are staffed from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. (765-423-2691). Staff members are answering emails as promptly as possible, and if necessary, clients are being invited in by appointment only. All business meetings have been canceled or moved online, and several LUM staff members are currently working from home.


LUM STILL Needs Your Support

Cash donations are preferred because they allow LUM to purchase what is needed, when it’s needed. Donations of “needed items” are also welcome and appreciated. Here is a list of “COVID-19 Supplies” that are urgently needed:

  • Disinfectant (for surfaces) – bleach, wipes, spray (Lysol), cleaner (Fantasik, 409, Clorox)
  • Hand Cleaning – antibacterial wipes (Lysol, Clorox), gloves (nitrile disposable), hand sanitizer, liquid hand soap
  • Paper Products – paper towels, facial tissues, toilet paper

Please either ship or drop off items to the LUM Office (420 N 4th Street, Lafayette, IN 47901).
