LUM Volunteer of the Month – Becca Lowrance

Lafayette Urban Ministry is pleased to recognize Becca S. Lowrance as the Volunteer of the Month for November 2024. Becca, a dedicated member of the West Lafayette community, exemplifies the spirit of service through her steadfast commitment to the LUM mission.

Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Becca holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary English, Speech, and Theater Education from Ball State University and a Master of Science in School Counseling from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Before dedicating herself to her family, she built a successful career in higher education, working in medical education at Central Michigan University and teaching healthcare leadership courses.

For the past 11 years, Becca has been a stay-at-home mom while remaining deeply engaged in community service. She and her family are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has been a vital part of LUM for over a decade, serving as a host site coordinator for Jubilee Christmas for 10 years and as a LUM Board member for the past four years. Her leadership in coordinating multiple sites for Jubilee Christmas ensures that families receive a meaningful and welcoming holiday experience.

“LUM gives me the opportunity to do one of my most favorite things: serving others and finding connections that make people feel loved,” Becca shared. “The world needs people willing to step out of their comfort zone and not just tell others that God loves them, but show them—just as Jesus Christ did during His ministry. There is no better way to do that than through service.”

Becca’s passion for service is rooted in her faith and family. She and her husband of 21 years have two daughters, 18 months and 11 years old, who were adopted and are the center of their lives. Becca credits her family and faith as the driving forces behind her volunteer work and appreciates the warmth and kindness she experiences at every LUM event.

“Wes and his staff at LUM are the most wonderful people. There is always a sense of warmth and kindness at any LUM event. You walk away with a smile and a renewed sense of love in your heart,” Becca said. “If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the negativity in the media, I encourage you to reach out to LUM or visit their website to find a way to serve. It will brighten your outlook.”

Outside of her LUM involvement, Becca enjoys spending time with her family on walks in the woods, traveling, organizing everything from events to closets, and participating in her book club. Her dedication to serving others and fostering connections has had a lasting impact on those around her. LUM is grateful for Becca’s continued commitment and the example she sets through her service.
