LUM Leadership: Challenging Myths & Fostering Empathy

Lafayette Urban Ministry recently dove into the book  Poverty, by America as part of a project to understand poverty better and find new ways to help those in need in our community. Hosted by Wes Tillett, LUM executive director, and led by Joe Micon and Jud Dolphin, former LUM executive directors, this project brought together LUM staff and board members for discussions that opened their eyes to the many challenges faced by people living in poverty.

The book showed how poverty is not just about not having enough money. It explained how things like unfair rules, stereotypes, and problems that go back for generations can keep people stuck in poverty. One big lesson from the book was that many of the ideas people have about why someone is poor are wrong. By learning about these myths, LUM members gained a better understanding of the real issues people face. LUM will be sharing some of these “poverty myths” in the near future.

This project has inspired LUM to challenge these myths and find new ways to help. LUM wants to show everyone that poverty is not just about individual choices — it is about bigger problems in our society. Through activities like these and the work of the Social Justice Team, LUM hopes to change how people think about poverty and make sure everyone is treated with respect and kindness. With this new understanding, LUM is ready to work towards a fairer and more caring community for everyone.
